Arnal Dayaratna: Menezes Holds Bar High for Kaka's Return to Selecao

Brazil coach Mano Menezes has explained his decision not to include Kaka in the preliminary roster for the Olympics by noting that he would prefer Kaka play the entire pre-season for Real Madrid, particularly given the importance of the 2012-2013 season for the Real Madrid midfielder's chances of securing a place in the 2014 World Cup. As reported on Goal.com, Menezes made the following remarks on the chances of Kaka's return to the Selecao in an interview with Brazilian channel sporTV:

"I think that Kaka can play a big role at the World Cup in 2014. I think that in order for than to happen, the next season will be very important. 2012-13 will say if he can play one more World Cup. And for this to happen, the pre-season will be crucial for him. And it happens that the Olympic Games take place exactly during pre-season in Europe. If I believe that he can be at the World Cup and that next season will be crucial, then I have to let him do what he needs to do."

On one hand, these are highly appropriate comments given Kaka's recent history of injuries and continuing struggle to return to form over the last three years. On the other, reading between the lines of Menezes's remarks, one can safely assume that Kaka's return to the Selecao will require nothing short of a spectacular return to form over a sustained period of time. Kaka clearly does not fit into Menezes's plans for the Brazilian national team given the surfeit of talent at his disposal in an attacking midfield position. Mano favors Ronaldinho, Hernanes and Ganso in the playmaker role, for starters, and additionally has his eye on Lucas Moura.

All this means that Kaka will need to deliver something short of a miracle to earn back his place in the national team. Knowing Kaka, however, a miraculous return to form may not be entirely out of the Real Madrid midfielder's grasp, vision and circle of hope. Kaka is no stranger to miracles either of a medical nature or as demonstrated by his miraculous form at AC Milan, soon after his transplantation to Europe from Sao Paulo. Kaka made a miraculous recovery from a swimming pool accident that happened in October 2000.

How conservatives lost faith in science

msnbc.com

How do liberals and conservatives differ in their attitudes toward science? Statistics indicate that conservatives' confidence in science as an institution has declined dramatically since 1974.

By Alan Boyle

An analysis of 36 years' worth of polling data indicates that confidence in science as an institution has steadily declined among Americans who consider themselves conservatives, while confidence levels have been at steadier levels for other ideological groups.

The study, published in the April issue of the American Sociological Review, provides fresh ammunition for those who complain that conservative views on issues such as climate change are at odds with the scientific consensus.

"You can see this distrust in science among conservatives reflected in the current Republican primary campaign," Gordon Gauchat, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Sheps Center for Health Services Research, said in a news release from the American Sociological Association. "When people want to define themselves as conservatives relative to moderates and liberals, you often hear them raising questions about the validity of global warming and evolution, and talking about how 'intellectual elites' and scientists don't necessarily have the whole truth."

It's not clear how much impact Gauchat's study will have on the debate over politics and science: Liberals are likely to see it as confirmation of what they already believe, while conservatives who are skeptical about the scientific elite are likely to greet these scientific claims with skepticism as well.

But the analysis represents a serious effort to flesh out political attitudes toward science with real data. Gauchat bases his findings on a statistical analysis of survey results from the General Social Survey, a long-running project that has weighed public confidence in social institutions since 1974. The GSS has been conducted annually or semiannually by the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center, or NORC, with an annual average of 1,500 Americans taking part.

Gauchat cross-referenced attitudes toward the scientific community with various demographic categories, and found that two categories showed a significant erosion of trust in science: conservatives and frequent churchgoers. People who identified themselves as conservatives voiced more confidence in science than moderates or liberals in 1974, but by 2010, that level had fallen by more than 25 percent.

Gordon Gauchat / UNC-Chapel Hill / ASR

This graph shows the unadjusted mean values for public trust in science, classified by self-reported political ideology between 1974 and 2010. The figures are derived from the General Social Survey.

Why the drop? Gauchat suggested that the character of the conservative movement has changed over the past three and a half decades ? and so has the character of the scientific establishment.

"Over the last several decades, there's been an effort among those who define themselves as conservatives to clearly identify what it means to be a conservative," he said. "For whatever reason, this appears to involve opposing science and universities, and what is perceived as the 'liberal culture.' So, self-identified conservatives seem to lump these groups together and rally around the notion that what makes 'us' conservatives is that we don't agree with 'them.'"

Meanwhile, the perception of science's role in society has shifted as well.

"In the past, the scientific community was viewed as concerned primarily with macro structural matters such as winning the space race," Gauchat said. "Today, conservatives perceive the scientific community as more focused on regulatory matters such as stopping industry from producing too much carbon dioxide."

Gauchat's findings run counter to at least one liberal stereotype about conservatives: that right-wingers are distrustful of scientists because they have less education. The figures do support a link between more education and more trust in science, but they also show that more highly educated conservatives are, if anything, more distrustful.

That trend fits best with the concept that "educated or high-information conservatives will hold hyper-opinions about science, because they have a more sophisticated grasp about what types of knowledge will conform with or contradict their ideological positions, and they will prefer to believe what supports their ideology," Gauchat wrote.

So what does this mean for the role of science in setting national policy? "In a political climate in which all sides do not share a basic trust in science, scientific evidence no longer is viewed as a politically neutral factor in judging whether a public policy is good or bad," Gauchat said. Heightened distrust could turn young people away from careers in science and engineering, and in the long run, that could hurt America's standing in a global economy that is becoming increasingly competitive on the technological front.

Vanderbilt University's Jonathan Metzl and Northwestern University's Jennifer Richeson explain the science behind how the brain weighs decisions and forms political beliefs.

'The Republican Brain'
Gauchat took on this project to assess the claims made by science journalist Chris Mooney in his 2005 book, "The Republican War on Science" ? and Mooney, who reviewed the paper before publication, said the findings confirmed those claims.

Wiley

"The Republican Brain" is the latest book from Chris Mooney.

"It's certainly gratifying to see this study come out," Mooney told me. "I appreciate that the author actually undertook to use data. I'm glad I wasn't just whistling in the wind when it came to Republicans and science."

Now Mooney is coming out with another book, titled "The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Don't Believe in Science."

"In the book, I'm really careful to say there's what we call 'nature' and what we call 'nurture,' and you can't explain anything in politics without both of them," he said. "Whenever you see change in a group over time, that's probably 'nurture.'"

Mooney said the factors Gauchat mentioned would fit in the nurture category, along with the GOP's "Southern strategy" to bring what were once traditionally Democratic states into the Republican fold. "This is tapping into the power of nurture, but I also say we've ignored nature for too long," he said.

In "The Republican Brain," Mooney weaves his case for "nature" in politics from a variety of studies tracing the brain-based differences between liberal and conservative views of reality. (You'll find some of them by following the links below.)

"You're starting to find things about fixity of belief, desire to have certainty, and you see that these things are also associated with conservatism," he said. "These traits are content-neutral. You could take today's conservatives, stick them in [Soviet] Russia, and they can be very pro-science."

Mooney said people may be born with brains that predispose them either to liberal-leaning traits such as "openness to experience," or conservative-leaning traits such as "conscientiousness."

"The research suggests that people are born with a predisposition, but it's only a predisposition," Mooney said. "'Just born that way' is a phrase that makes me uncomfortable, because it implies some sort of hard wiring. Genes aren't destiny."

If you haven't figured it out by now, Mooney considers himself a liberal, and he's doubtful that any amount of "nurture" could turn him into a conservative. But he said liberals could learn a lot from conservatives, specifically about loyalty to leaders and to their cause. Like conservatives, some liberals may find themselves at odds with the scientific consensus on some issues. Which issues, specifically? Mooney pointed to hard-line stands against hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. fracking), nuclear power, childhood vaccination and genetically modified organisms.

"Liberals have wanted to believe that if the system were just fair, then everybody would agree with us," he said. "That's a liberal fantasy. Actually, it turns out that liberalism is not the only way of being. ... Liberals should realize that not everybody's like them, and liberals' instincts in politics could be exactly what you don't want to do."

I'm imagining there's a lot to disagree with here, whether you're a liberal or a conservative. Good thing there's a comment section below. To paraphrase Monty Python, this is the right room for an argument.

Thyme Kills Acne Bacteria

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Natural compounds in the herb thyme were more effective against acne-causing bacteria in cultures than were conventional treatments. Cynthia Graber reports.

More 60-Second Science

Compounds found in the herb thyme have antibiotic properties. Now scientists have demonstrated that thyme might have a future role in fighting acne.

A number of factors cause acne, but the primary agents are bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes, or PA. Topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide are commonly used to kill the bacteria. But they can irritate the skin.

To test other options, researchers steeped thyme, marigold and myrrh in alcohol to extract the plants active compounds. They tested the resulting tinctures on the PA bacteria. All three herbs killed more of the bacteria than an alcohol control. Thyme was the most effective of all. And thyme was also significantly more effective than the highest prescribed concentration of benzoyl peroxide. The research was presented at a conference of the Society for General Microbiology in Dublin.

The scientists say more research should be done to understand how the tinctures work on the molecular level, and to test them on actual skin environments.

Cooks already pass the thyme to add flavor to food. But acne sufferers could someday see thyme fly?into their medicine cabinets.

How the Medical Transcription Companies changed the health ...

Medical Transcription is nothing but the process of converting voice recorded prescriptions from doctors into text format. The process of generating hard copies for medical reports and prescriptions has been an old business which has also been adopted by several countries including India. Today, there are many Medical Transcription Companies located in and around the world that help generate transcriptions in this allied health profession.? Medical transcriptionists either work from home or through hospitals to convert the prescriptions and store it in electronic text format for further use of patients and hospital records.? Nowadays, there has been a significant rise of outsourcing companies who handle medical Transcription at the behest of physicians as well as hospitals.

Medical Transcription companies use a transcriber to convert audio prescriptions directed by physicians into text format and the Medical Transcriptionists (MT) see to it that the text s accurate and precise.

Transcription in India is mostly handled by special outsourcing companies who hire transcriptionists (another rising profession) to convert most of their prescriptions and patient records into text format. Medical Transcription Companies have although been criticized slating whether transcription work should be outsourced or no highlighting privacy issues of patients. Another concern has been the issue of proper educational skills of transcriptionists as some of the do not have the pre requisite skills to handle transcribed data leading to fatal errors and miscalculations as well as loss of data at times. This is the reason why Transcription Companies nowadays are more careful and peculiar about the quality of the professional hired to convert prescriptions.

Medical services outsourcing as some say is a must have today as there has been a tremendous rise in the total data of patients and to let it be handled by hospitals and physicians alone is a bane to the medical industry itself.

This is why the government itself encourages more and more outsourcing companies to handle transcription data and ease out the work whilst generating employment at the same time. To safeguard privacy of patients, stricter guidelines too have been set by certain companies and there are various codes nowadays that Transcriptionists follow namely regarding use of professional language instead slang as well as avoiding fatal errors while converting data of patients. The employees are being hired more on full time basis as well unlike opting to work from home

Medical Transcription Companies hardly existed few years back but today they are the backbone of the allied health professions.? Also the outsourcing has garnered positive response and has been accepted well by medical professionals and hospitals who believe that it will help ease out the work load and also prove to be time saving with the hiring of more professional medical transcriptionists. In India, there are innumerous companies who take up this task like Alfa e-solutions, Blue Matrix, Acroseas, Masim Infotech, Mashcom Technologies, Mediland Transtech, Point Perfect Transcription Services and many more companies that have started in various cities in India to cater to the needs of physicians and hospitals in converting the medical data to text format.

Cheap Carpets ? Tips On Ways To Give Your Household A Facelift

by Home on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 | Comments Off

Flooring can be a relatively simple do it yourself project for a novice. Focus on putting tile in your kitchen and bathrooms and replace your carpet with hardwood floors. Home improvement stores possess a wealth of here is how to make this process simple for you to accomplish. Watch out for carpet installation sales at local locations of national home improvement retailers. They will frequently offer installation for a low, low cost to encourage cheap carpets purchases. This is a superb time to have new carpet put in your house, as the price of labor and installation, often can exceed the cost of the actual product.

Before investing in new hardwood floors, seek advice from an expert, about looking at the current floors in your home. Sometimes, you might have beautiful, natural hardwood hiding underneath layers of carpet or linoleum, that is just waiting to become refinished. You?ll find yourself having a nicer looking, higher quality floor for less money. Installing carpet could be a daunting task if done yourself, or an expensive task should you pay a professional to get it done. Fortunately there is an alternative. Much like vinyl floor tiles, you will find carpet tiles that exist. These too have adhesive backing that allows you to set them up easily, plus they look just like real sheet carpeting when installed.

Use carpet samples to carpet an entire room! Retail stores often throw away their samples. Cut each sample up into smaller pieces and tack or glue them into place for free flooring. Cut them in identically sized pieces for any tile effect or cut them in irregular geometric shapes to have an abstract look. Before investing in new hardwood flooring, check with a professional about looking at the current floors in your home. Sometimes you may have beautiful, natural hardwood hiding underneath layers of carpet or linoleum that?s just waiting to become refinished. You will wind up having a nicer looking, higher quality floor at a lower price.

Carpet the bottoms from the drawers you keep you tools in. This will not only make the shop room a quieter place but it will help protect your valuable tools. Keep those tools rust free by spraying carpeting lightly with machine oil before you place the various tools within the drawer. Stairs can be a great accessory for a house, however they can also be dangerous. Consider putting carpeting in your stairs to avoid any accidents. Rising and down the stairs in socks can be a neck-breaking accident if one slips on the wooden staircase. Try to take a look at different carpet or rug designs that could look great on your stairs.

Thinking about putting down carpeting for your home, be sure to choose carpeting in dark colors only. Light colors for example beige, white, or light brown often get dirt and stains, making your carpeting appear cheap and used. Go for colors like green or dark brown to hide what shouldn?t be seen and prolong the life of your carpet. New floor covering is a great way to update the look and feel of any room in your house. A reputable flooring company can install new hardwood, carpet, laminate or tile flooring in as little as eventually or visit your local home improvement store for do-it-yourself options.

Australia bans Chinese company from Web network

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australia has banned Chinese technology giant Huawei from bidding to help build a nationwide high-speed Internet network due to concern about cyber attacks traced to China.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Monday the move was among "prudent decisions" to ensure the planned network functions properly.

The ban highlights concern about Beijing's cyber warfare efforts, a spate of hacking attempts aimed at Western companies and the role of Chinese equipment providers, which are expanding abroad.

Huawei Technologies Ltd. is one of the world's biggest producers of switching equipment that forms the heart of phone and data networks. The company rejected suggestions it might be a security risk and said it has won the trust of global telecoms carriers.

Beijing's relations with Western governments have been strained by complaints about hacking traced to China and aimed at oil, technology and other companies. A U.S. congressional panel has said it will investigate whether allowing Huawei and other Chinese makers of telecoms gear to expand in the United States might aid Chinese spying.

The Australian attorney general's office told Huawei late last year it would be barred from bidding for work on the 36 billion Australian dollar ($38 billion) network, according to The Australian Financial Review newspaper. It said that decision was prompted by Australian intelligence officials who cited hacking attacks traced to China.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office said it could not comment on individual companies but a Huawei official confirmed the newspaper's account. He spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose conversations between Huawei and the government.

Huawei expressed disappointment about the decision. It has operated in Australia since 2004 and said it already works with the country's major telecoms carriers.

"Huawei will continue to be open and transparent and work to find ways of providing assurance around the security of our technology," said a company statement.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner and Chinese demand for iron ore and other minerals has driven an Australian economic boom. But Canberra is uneasy about Beijing's rising military spending and growing assertiveness in Asia.

The United States and Australia announced plans in September to include cyber security in their 61-year-old defense alliance, the first time Washington has done that with a partner outside NATO.

President Barack Obama announced plans in November to send U.S. military aircraft and up to 2,500 Marines to Australia's north for a training hub to help allies and protect American interests across Asia.

Plans approved by Australian lawmakers in 2010 call for building a fiber-optic network to provide high-speed Internet access to 90 percent of the country's homes.

Huawei said it is building similar networks in Britain, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries.

"You don't get to that level of success unless you have customers that trust your company, your staff and your technology," the statement said.

Gillard, who was at a security conference in Seoul, said the planned Australian network is a crucial national project.

"You would expect, as a government, we would make all of the prudent decisions to make sure that that infrastructure project does what we want it to do, and we've taken one of those decisions," she said, when asked about Huawei.

Gillard gave no details of the reason for the decision.

Huawei was founded in 1987 by a former Chinese military engineer but says it has no connection to the military. The company says it is employee-owned but has released few details about who controls it, which has fueled questions abroad.

Huawei had been endorsed as a bidder on the Australian project by the technical department of the government-owned National Broadband Network Co., the Financial Review said. It said the attorney general blocked that after intelligence officials objected.

Huawei, based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, reported revenues for the first half of last year of 98.3 billion yuan ($15.8 billion) and says its equipment is used in 140 countries.

In 2010, it was blocked from taking part in upgrading a U.S. phone carrier's network and last year was forced to unwind its acquisition of an American computer company after a security panel rejected the deal.

The U.S. House of Representatives intelligence committee said in November it would investigate whether allowing Chinese companies to expand in the United States might aid Chinese electronic spying.

It cited Huawei and rival ZTE Corp., another telecom equipment supplier, as being among the companies to be examined.

The panel said it will look into the role Chinese companies play in supplying components for U.S. telecoms systems and whether access to those systems might allow foreign governments to gather information.
