The queen visited with fawning British Olympians in the athletes village and rode to the top of the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit tower beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband, Prince Philip, and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside. She wore a brooch given to her in 1948 ? the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

In describing her role in the opening ceremony, created by director Danny Boyle, Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

The Guardian called the queen's appearance "one of the highlights of Danny Boyle's tumultuously inventive opening ceremony of the 2012 Games. ... Now, thanks to Boyle, we really have seen everything."

"I was worried that there was too much self-parody, that the world might be laughing at us," wrote columnist Giles Coren in The Times of London. "But they were laughing with us. They were silently awed."

The show-stopping moment featured the queen making her acting debut alongside Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond in a film beamed into the stadium.

Boyle's production showed Bond striding into Buckingham Palace to escort his VIP guest to the Olympic ceremony. Many had expected a famous actress to play the role of the queen, and there was an audible gasped as the real-life royal was seen to swivel round in her desk chair and declare: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 86-year-old monarch agreed last year to participate. The filming took place at the palace in March and April and featured two of the queen's corgi dogs: Monty and Holly.

At the end of the film segment, two stuntmen dressed as Bond and the queen parachuted from a helicopter into the stadium, and moments later Elizabeth and Philip emerged in the stands.

Boyle told NBC television that the queen had been a natural. "You don't have to tell her something twice," he said. "She picks it up straight away, about cameras and angles."

The sequence has already provided the defining images of the games, according to the Daily Telegraph in Australia, where the queen also reigns.

"A few hundred years ago director Danny Boyle could have been sent to the Tower for even suggesting such treason," the Sydney newspaper said. "But as if to show how far England and the monarchy have come in that time, Her Majesty not only let Boyle get away with it. She was actually in on the joke."

The German newspaper Die Welt wrote that "often seen as reserved and unapproachable, the queen changed all that alongside James Bond."

The queen offered more surprises Saturday as she met about 150 members of the British Olympic team. Spectators took in the scene from balconies draped in Union Jack flags.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said. "Last night will never be topped. I'll never get an experience like that again, and then this will never be topped either."

The queen also met athletes from other nations in the dining hall.

Since 1956, there hasn't been a Pulaski Day Parade without Mieczyslaw Laba in attendance.

That didn't change today.

Laba sat in a lawn chair under the shade of a tree on Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga and watched as a sea of red and white - the colors of the Polish flag - passed in front of him for a little more than a half-hour.

"It's too short now," he said. "It used to be longer years ago."

Laba, 88, a Polish native who came to the United States in 1956, said more people used to attend when the parade celebrating local Polish heritage went down Broadway in Buffalo. He remembers the 1962 parade, when President John F. Kennedy served as an honorary grand marshal, which drew hundreds of thousands of people to the area.

He also said that it seems more of those attending parades in recent years aren't of Polish descent.

Event organizers estimate about half of the people attending the parade and Polish-American Arts Festival, held Thursday through Sunday in the Cheektowaga Town Park, are not Polish. Still, there are nearly 350,000 Americans of Polish descent in Western New York and about one-third of them attend the parade and festival, they said.

"I think people who even have one drop of Polish blood come here to enjoy the festival," said Jola Simon, the grand marshal of this year's parade. Simon, a Polish native who came to the United States when she was 14, has been the director of the General Pulaski Association of the Niagara Frontier for more than 30 years.

Mateusz Stasiek, vice consul in the Consulate General's Office for the Republic of Poland, arrived in the area about a month ago and took part in his first Pulaski Day Parade as one of eight honorary grand marshals.

"There are so many excellent, wise people here from Poland," he said.

The annual festivities are in honor of American Gen. Casimir Pulaski, a member of the Polish nobility who served with the Colonial forces during the Revolutionary War.

Gen. Pulaski is known as the father of the American cavalry, importing the European style of fighting on horseback to America. He funded the American war effort with $50,000 of his family's fortune, an amount that would equal $1.27 million today. Pulaski may have even saved the life of Gen. George Washington, as he covered Washington's rear flank during a retreat after the Battle of Brandywine.

The parade began at the Thruway Plaza about 1:30 p.m. and went down Walden Avenue to Harlem Road before finishing at the Cheektowaga Town Park shortly after 2:30 p.m. Although Walden Avenue had sparse amounts of people, thousands gathered on Harlem Road closer to the park. And as the parade ended, people picked up their lawn chairs and descended upon the festival, which offered music and dance performances as well as an array of Polish food.

Frank and Stella Barnashuk, of Lackawanna, used to march in the Pulaski Day Parade and were "Mr. & Mrs. Dyngus" at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Buffalo up until about six years ago.

"Now, we watch," said Stella, who was holding a Polish flag in one hand and an American flag in the other.

Frank and Stella, who each had parents born in Poland, have been attending the parade for about 25 years and have noticed more people of other backgrounds have joined people of Polish descent during the parade and festival over the years.

Stella Barnashuk said it shows the peace and unity among those in Western New York.

"We accept everybody," said her husband, embracing the motto that everyone is Polish on Pulaski Day.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Once again donning the mantle of consoler-in-chief, President Barack Obama will travel Sunday to Colorado to comfort distraught families of those gunned down in a minute and a half of real-life horror at a midnight movie showing.

While authorities gather evidence on the suspect and the nation tries to fathom what drove the gunman, Obama will meet with loved ones struggling with pain and grief.

"We need to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

The president planned just a brief visit to Colorado ? a bit under 2 ? hours ? during which he was also scheduled to meet with local officials in Aurora, where the shots rang out at a multiplex theater early Friday. Twelve of the victims died, 58 were injured.

After the Colorado stop, Obama is flying to San Francisco, where on Monday he'll begin a previously scheduled three-day campaign trip that includes a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nev., multiple fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state and a speech to the National Urban League convention in New Orleans.

The shock of Friday's rampage brought the sprawling and sometimes vitriolic presidential campaign to a virtual standstill.

Obama cut short a political trip to Florida to return to Washington. Mitt Romney canceled interviews. Both campaigns pulled ads off the air in Colorado out of respect for the victims.

But with election activities set to resume in the new week, Vice President Joe Biden is speaking to the National Association of Police Organizations in Palm Beach County, Fla., on Monday, and Romney is to address the VFW on Tuesday.

For Obama, the unhappy task of articulating sorrow and loss has become a familiar one.

Indeed, for modern presidents, it's become an accepted facet of the office ? and for some, an opportunity for soaring words that rise above the partisan trench warfare of day-to-day governing.

Not 10 months in office, Obama led mourners at a service for victims of the November 2009 Fort Hood shooting, bowing his head before shrines of framed photos and boots belonging to the soldiers among the 13 who perished.

In January of last year, he spoke at a memorial for the six victims killed in Tucson, Ariz., when a gunman attacked Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents.

The following April, when some 300 people were killed in a multi-state outbreak of tornadoes, Obama flew to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to commiserate with residents whose homes were in ruins. A month later, Obama went to Joplin, Mo., after a monster twister claimed 161 lives. This year, he came back on the storm's anniversary to give a commencement speech at Joplin High School.

In between these public observances have been countless private meetings with families of troops who fell in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For Obama, the Colorado visit was to be his second in just over three weeks. Last month, he flew to Colorado Springs to share the pain of homeowners whose houses had been turned to charred heaps by a record outbreak of wildfires.

Obama had already been a frequent Colorado visitor ? no surprise given the state's key role in his re-election bid. He won the state by more than 8 percentage points over John McCain four years ago. But neither Obama's nor Romney's camp expects that big a margin this time. Recent polls place Obama's lead inside the margin of error.

But for one more day, at least, electoral considerations remained on the back burner.

"This weekend I hope everyone takes some time for prayer and reflection," Obama said in his Saturday broadcast, "for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

ScienceDaily (July 20, 2012) ? Many galaxies contain enormous amounts of molecular gas in small areas near their nuclei. Highly condensed molecular gas is a birthplace of lots of stars. Therefore, it is important to investigate the physical state and chemical properties of molecular gas at galaxy centers through observation. To obtain detailed observation data, it is best to survey the center of the Milky Way Galaxy in which our solar system exists.

The research team observed emission lines at wavelengths of 0.87 mm, emitted from carbon monoxide molecules in an area of several degrees that includes the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The ASTE 10 m telescope in the Atacama Desert (4,800 meters above sea level) of Chile was used for observation. More than 250 hours in total were spent on the prolonged observation from 2005 to 2010.

The research team compared this observation data with data of emission lines at wavelengths of 2.6 mm, emitted from carbon monoxide molecules in the same area, which were obtained using the NRO 45m Telescope (Note: 1). When intensity values of emission lines at different wavelengths, emitted from carbon monoxide molecules, are compared, it is possible to estimate temperature and density of molecular gas. In this way, the research team succeeded in drawing detailed distribution maps of "warm, dense" molecular gas of more than 50 degrees Kelvin and more than 10,000 hydrogen molecules per cubic centimeter at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy for the first time ever.

Oka, the research team leader, said, "The results are astonishing." The "warm, dense" molecular gas in that area is concentrated in four clumps (Sgr A, L=+1.3?, L=-0.4?, L=-1.2?). Moreover, it turns out that these four gas clumps are all moving at a very fast speed of more than 100 km/s. Sgr A, one of the four gas clumps, contains "Sagittarius A*," the nucleus of the Milky Way Galaxy. Oka added, "The remaining three gas clumps are objects we discovered for the very first time. It is thought that 'Sagittarius A*' is the location of a supermassive black hole that is approximately 4 million times the mass of the sun. It can be inferred that the gas clump 'Sgr A' has a disk-shaped structure with radius of 25 light-years and revolves around the supermassive black hole at a very fast speed."

On the other hand, the team found signs of expansion other than rotation in the remaining three gas clumps. This means that the gas clumps, L=+1.3?, L=-0.4?and L=-1.2?, have structures that were formed by supernova explosions that occurred within the gas clumps. The gas clump "L=+1.3?" has the largest amount of expansion energy. Its expanding energy is equivalent to 200 supernova explosions. The age of the gas masses is estimated as approximately 60,000 years old. Therefore, given that the energy source is the supernova explosions, the supernova explosions have continued to occur every 300 years.

The research team used the NRO 45m Telescope again to further examine the molecular gas's distribution, motion and composition to determine whether supernova explosions caused the expansion. "Observation clearly showed that the energy source of L=+1.3? is multiple supernova explosions. We detected multiple expansion structures and molecules attributed to shock waves," Oka said about the excitement when observing it. "Based on the observation of L=+1.3?, it is also natural to think that the expanding gas clumps L=-0.4? and L=-1.2? derived energy from multiple supernova explosions," Oka added.

A supernova explosion is a huge explosion that occurs when a star with more massive than eight to ten times the mass of the sun ends its life. Such a high occurrence of supernova explosions (once per 300 years) indicates that many young, massive stars are concentrated in the gas clumps. In other words, this means that there is a massive "star cluster" in each gas clump. Based on the frequency of the supernova explosions, the team estimated the mass of the star cluster buried in L=+1.3?as more than 100,000 times the mass of the sun, which is equivalent to that of the largest star cluster found in the Milky Way Galaxy.

As just described, the star cluster is huge, but it had not been discovered until now. "The solar system is located at the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy's disk, and is about 30,000 light-years away from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The huge amount of gas and dust lying between the solar system and the center of the Milky Way Galaxy prevent not only visible light, but also infrared light, from reaching the Earth. Moreover, innumerable stars in the bulge and disc of the Milky Way Galaxy lie in the line of sight. Therefore, no matter how large the star cluster is, it is very difficult to directly see the star cluster at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy," Oka explained.

"Huge star clusters at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy have an important role related to formation and growth of the Milky Way Galaxy's nucleus," said Oka. According to theoretical calculations, when the density of stars at the center of star clusters increases, the stars are merged together, one after another. Then, it is expected that IMBHs with several hundred times the mass of the sun are formed. Eventually, these IMBHs and star clusters sink into the nucleus of the Milky Way Galaxy. It can be thought that the IMBHs and star clusters are then merged further, and form a massive black hole at the Milky Way Galaxy's nucleus. Alternatively, the IMBHs and star clusters could help expand an existing massive black hole.

It can be thought that the supermassive black hole at "Sagittarius A*," the nucleus of the Milky Way Galaxy, has also been grown up through these processes. In summary, the new discovery is the finding of "cradles" of IMBHs that become "seeds" of the supermassive black hole at the nucleus.

"We would like to observe IMBHs in the star cluster. Actually, our observation data has already indicated traces of IMBHs," Oka said. One of the newly discovered gas masses, "L=-0.4?," contains two small gas clumps moving at a very fast speeds. If it is confirmed that these small gas clumps are rotating, it can be inferred that there are "invisible huge masses" at the center of the gas clumps. These "invisible huge masses" are likely to be IMBHs hidden in the center of the star cluster. Professor Oka expects developments in future research, saying, "In order to confirm the existence of IMBHs, we are planning to conduct further observations. The new discovery is an important step toward unraveling the formation and growth mechanism of the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way Galaxy's nucleus, which is a top-priority issue in galactic physics."
