What Is Actually Going On In Those Fitness Classes At The Gym ...

There are a lot of fitness classes available these days. To someone who is new to fitness it can be a bit confusing when you are looking at a gym or fitness center and see this list of classes with a whole bunch of different names. So we have taken the time to provide a down and dirty overview of the basic classes many places offer to act as a cheat-sheet to help you decide what will work best for you.

Fitness Classes

  1. Abs Classes ? In a nutshell you work your abdominal and core muscles for about 20 to 30 minutes. This class is great for people who want to learn new exercises and ways to train the abs. It is also a great workout but you will need something else if you want to burn fat.
  2. Aerobics Classes ? Usually high energy classes that help you move and groove to burn calories in a choreographed set of movements and exercises. This is great for burning fat and working the heart but won?t do a lot for muscle strength or tone.
  3. Body Sculpting Classes ? These are like aerobic classes but add an element of weights and exercise bands to work on more muscle tone. Usually they are a 50-50 mix of aerobic exercise and sculpting exercises. Health and Fitness Fun at Zumba Class

  4. Boot Camps ? These are bigger classes geared for a group mentality and very hard work. Typically you have a drill instructor pushing you as you do a lot of cardio and bodyweight exercises. You will get the heart rate up, burn calories, build muscle, and work on endurance. The classes are great but usually not for beginners into fitness.
  5. Circuit Training ? This is like a body sculpting class but usually without any aerobic segment. Instead you keep the heart rate up by moving through weight exercises (typically using dumbbells) quickly and then repeating the circuit. It burns calories and is nice for muscle endurance and tone.
  6. Dance Fitness ? This can be a lot of types such as jazz, cardio funk, or even Zumba. It mixes aerobics and dance moves into a fast paced routine that burns a lot of calories. Generally this is a high energy, fast paced aerobics class, but don?t expect to learn a lot of actual dance moves; you are there to sweat.
  7. Cycling Class ? These are also known as spin classes. If you like riding a bike these can be a great way to get some serious cardio work in. Classes vary from steady to variable speeds. Most come with high energy and loud music. The bikes have come a long way and are much more comfortable and sturdy. The upper body doesn?t get much work but the legs will feel the burn and get toned up while you burn calories.
  8. Kickboxing ? This is another high energy cardio classes that exchanges punching and kicking for other choreographed movements. You aren?t learning how to fight, but more training like a boxer would (which is a great workout) by getting the heart rate up for short bursts and then keeping it at a moderate level in between.
  9. Yoga ? This is a great class for any level of fitness because it works on flexibility and toning. You will sweat but not burn nearly as many calories compared to other classes. However many people reduce a lot more stress and loosen up more in yoga than anywhere else.
  10. Power Yoga ? A more intense yoga form that works on strength and flexibility more than regular yoga. You will also get a bit more of an aerobic affect.

Obama staffers reveal odd campaign email strategy

President Barack Obama (Damir Sagolj/Reuters)Has Barack Obama ever invited you to dinner?

If you were one of the tens of millions of people on the president's campaign email list this cycle, your inbox was full of odd dinner invitations, personal questions and leading statements such as "So," "It doesn't have to be this way" and "Meet me for dinner."

Now that the campaign is over, staffers have finally explained those odd fundraising subject lines and their apparent success to Bloomberg Businessweek's Joshua Green.

"We did extensive A-B testing not just on the subject lines and the amount of money we would ask people for," Amelia Showalter, director of digital analytics, told Green, "but on the messages themselves and even the formatting." The team would predict how much money could be generated by each subject line sample.

Profanity was a hit, the phrase "I will be outspent" was a winner and recipients apparently preferred "ugly, yellow highlighting" over something more aesthetically pleasing.

In the end, most of the $690?million the president raised online was through email.

The most successful subject line? "Hey."

Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on parts of the U.S. East Coast a month ago Thursday after tearing through the Caribbean. In the weeks since, the storm's scope has come into sharper focus.

DEATHS

Sandy killed at least 125 people in the United States. That includes 60 in New York ? 43 of them in New York City ? 34 in New Jersey and 16 in Pennsylvania. At least seven people died in West Virginia, where the storm dropped heavy snow. Sandy killed 71 people in the Caribbean, including 54 in Haiti.

LOSSES

Sandy is being blamed for about $62 billion in damage and other losses in the U.S., the vast majority of it in New York and New Jersey, a number that could increase. It's the second-costliest storm in U.S. history after 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which caused $128 billion in damage in inflation-adjusted dollars. Sandy caused at least $315 million in damage in the Caribbean.

DAMAGE

Sandy damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, more than 72,000 in New Jersey alone. In New York, 305,000 housing units were damaged or destroyed and more than 265,000 businesses affected. In Cuba, the number of damaged homes has been estimated at 130,000 to 200,000.

DISASTER AID

The governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are mounting a united effort to get federal aid for the region. New York is seeking $42 billion, including about $9 billion for projects to head off damage in future storms; New Jersey wants $37 billion, including $7.4 billion for future projects; and Connecticut seeks $3.2 billion for the future.

MAGNITUDE

The National Hurricane Center now says tropical force winds extended 820 miles at their widest, down from an earlier estimate of 1,000 miles. Sandy's pure kinetic energy for storm surge and wave "destruction potential" reached a 5.8 on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 0 to 6 scale, the highest measured.

DOWN THE ROAD

Governments are seeking money to help head off future disasters, as climate scientists continue to predict rising sea levels and the potential for more bad storms. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants electrical transformers in commercial buildings hauled to upper floors; the ability to shutter key tunnels, airports and subways; and to require hospitals to have backup power on high ground instead of on lower floors or in basements.

Social Media and Marriage - Relationship Solutions

In modern society social media has become an inescapable part of life. From keeping up with high school and college classmates, to networking professional most adults have a Facebook or Twitter account. In October of 2012, Facebook had over 1 billion active accounts users.? With the development of social media comes complexity in romantic relationships; should couples share an account? Should partners have each other?s passwords and unlimited access to each other?s accounts? Is it okay to ?friend? ex-lovers? At what point in a relationship do you change your status from ?single? to ?in a relationship? ?

In order to avoid drama, confusion and hurt it?s essential to have a few ground rules. Rules that you and your partner are informed of and agree upon:

1.) Sharing a Facebook account with your partner- typically this is not the best idea, as it portrays the couple as fused and overly involved. When couples share a FB account it can look like there is a lack of trust between them, that one partner (or both) must absolutely know every detail of the other partner?s communication. Everyone needs a little personal space- it?s healthy and normal, having individual FB accounts shouldn?t be too much space. There are exceptions to this- like when one partner is active duty in the military and the spouse is keeping family/friends posted on things. But these exceptions are few and far between.

2.) Passwords- exist for a reason. They are to protect privacy. If you feel that you need to invade your partner?s privacy to find out who they are talking to or what they are doing when you?re not there, chances are you don?t trust him/her. In that case the healthy thing to do is discuss these feelings with your partner, not spy on them. If you just can?t get rid of the feeling, as him/her to open his account and go through it with you. If there is nothing to hide, then it should not be a problem, and by having him/her present and consenting it?s not a violation of privacy.

3.) Friending Ex?s- it?s not forbidden to friend an ex on FB, however it?s a delicate situation that takes some consideration. Much of whether it?s appropriate or not depends on how the past relationship ended. Was it friendly or bitter? Are there residual feelings there or not? Is maintaining contact with this person important? If the relationship ended in a difficult way with either of you both still having feelings- don?t do it. A good rule of thumb is- if you wouldn?t pick up the phone once a year to see how he/she?s doing or if you wouldn?t send a Christmas card- don?t do it. If contact with the ex is going to jeopardize the security of your relationship- it?s definitely a don?t.

4.) Relationship Status- in the modern day of casual relationships, hooking up and sexual friendships, when do you officially change your FB status? After you?ve had a direct conversation about being committed with the other person. Nobody wants to get online and see that the person they been dating is suddenly ?in a relationship,? without consenting to it first. Before you make it official on FB, make it official in person.

5.) No secrets. This one can?t be stressed enough. When we reconnect with long lost friends or ex?s through FB it can be natural to feel a certain sense of familiarity and comfortability. It?s not a good idea to confide in your ex- that your current boyfriend is disappointing or never says the sweet things your ex used to say. This only complicates matters, and keeps you from addressing the real issues- whatever?s wrong between you and your current partner. If you would not want your boyfriend or girlfriend to read a message between you and your FB friend, don?t send it.

Committed, adult relationships are based on trust and being genuine. With modern technology there is a lot of room for cheating; either physically or emotionally. In order to protect your relationship use the rules above to guide your Social medial persona, you?ll be glad you did.

YouTube Update Connects Android Devices, Google TV

YouTube Android App Update

Truly putting the "tube" in YouTube, the Google-owned video service has updated its Android app to allow users to more easily send YouTube videos to Google TV.

Announced today, the update for the Android and Google TV YouTube app automatically connects devices on the same Wi-Fi connection, allowing mobile users to instantly play content via the Google TV. Pair your device, click the TV icon that appears, and the video will appear via Google TV.

"What if you could send YouTube videos from your phone to your TV with a click of a button?" product manager Timbo Drayson wrote in a blog post. "It's an idea we've been working on since 2010, and today we're taking the next step."

The update essentially turns your phone or tablet into a remote control; pause, scroll, or skip to the next video as it plays on the TV. You can also search for another video or browse the Web on your gadget while the video continues to play uninterrupted on the TV set.

By adding multiple devices to the TV, Drayson said users can include friends and family on their playlists.

Two years ago, YouTube launched its Remote app for Android, providing a virtual connection between a mobile phone and YouTube Leanback, a Web-based option for full-screen viewing. But the experience of connecting phone and Google TV was a bit complicated - you had to sign in to YouTube Remote on your phone and YouTube Leanback on your Google TV. Now, you just sign in to YouTube and you're ready to go.

Last month, Google announced that it would offer access to movies, TV shows, and music on Google TV via the Google Play store.

Google has struggled with Google TV, but that hasn't stopped hardware manufacturers from investing in the platform. Earlier this summer, Vizio introduced its first Google TV-powered set-top box product, which let users experience live TV, streaming content, and cloud gaming from OnLive. Sony also announced plans for a Google TV set-top box around the same time.

Kratom Comes to Florida: Is the Next Big Drug Craze Dangerous?

The busty clerk at Grateful J's head shop in Boca Raton holds out a small brown vial. The label reads "Lucky," and she promises the stuff packs a punch.

"You'll want to throw it to the back of your throat," she suggests. "I'd say drink the whole thing. Maybe drink half, wait a little bit, and see how you feel."

One of the many brands of powdered kratom capsules available at South Florida head shops.

One of the many brands of powdered kratom capsules available at South Florida head shops.

The potion is kratom, and it's taking center stage in America's next big drug scare. In recent months, MSNBC reported that kratom has sent users to the ER, the Daily called it a "hallucinogenic drug" with "potentially fatal side effects," Forbes asked if it was the next bath salts, and ABC Action News in Tampa claimed that "it can be more difficult to get off than heroin." Kratom is legal and supported by a vocal community touting its health benefits, but in the wake of bath salts and synthetic pot ? drugs tied to scores of gruesome crimes this year, including (probably erroneously) the "Miami Zombie" attack ? lawmakers are eager to ban the next big thing.

"It's not a safe high by any means," Frank LoVecchio, director of Phoenix's Banner Good Samaritan Poison and Drug Information Center, says. "If you take enough of it, it has opiate-like activities. It makes people high kind of the same way morphine or heroin would make them high."

But is kratom actually a youth-menacing brain-destroyer or merely another victim of Reefer Madness-like hysteria? That question has become important as the drug finds its way to South Florida and lawmakers debate whether to prohibit it. New bans, after all, cost taxpayers, prosecutors, and cops thousands of dollars and countless hours.

"Every time a new drug is criminalized, it puts more pressure on law enforcement, the courts, our jails, and it criminalizes more people," says Grant Smith, federal policy coordinator for the Drug Policy Alliance. "Asking law enforcement to add this to the long list of things they have to deal with... could be wasteful."

To figure out whether kratom is a dangerous threat, a medical miracle, or just a fun way to get stoned, I forked over $45 for one vial of "Lucky" liquid kratom and one packet of capsules called "Floories Exotics Jackacock" and prepared to experiment.

Before ingesting the stuff, though, I researched its background. Kratom products are made from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree that grows in Southeast Asia. Until a few decades ago, it was used mostly in remote places such as rural Malaysia and Thailand, where locals prescribed it for pain relief, sometimes substituting it for opium.

Indeed, scientists have found that kratom leaves contain naturally occurring chemicals that stimulate opioid receptors in the brain, similar to the effects of prescription painkillers. Researchers have studied the plant's potential to alleviate a variety of ailments, from arthritis and diabetes to depression and alcoholism. In 2010, scientists from Malaysia's Center for Drug Research wrote in the International Journal on Drug Policy that kratom "merits serious scientific investigation" as a therapy for heroin withdrawal.

As word of kratom's potential benefits has spread, a worldwide kratom community has blossomed over Internet message boards. Fans talk up both its medicinal uses ? including its ability to curb anxiety and reduce pain ? and its recreational highs.

Take Daniel, a 23-year-old kratom enthusiast from the Tampa area who asked that his last name not be used. He first tried kratom two years ago as an alternative to pharmaceutical painkillers while suffering through painful kidney stones. Now he buys bulk orders of the crushed leaf and brews a lemon tea he drinks every day. Even though the pain from his kidney stones is long gone, he says the drink helps with depression.

"It can be mildly addictive," he concedes. "It does cause dependence when you take it daily. But it's more like coffee. I don't miss work or go out and commit crimes to get more of it."

Others, such as Kelly Lay, have switched from addictive opiates to kratom without experiencing the nasty effects of withdrawal. "Three years ago I gave up the daily use of opiates and switched myself to kratom effortlessly, without withdrawal... I was extremely depressed while taking opiates, and I was not obtaining them legally," the 50-year-old organic farmer from Sarasota says in an email. "I have absolutely no shame in using an herb to deal with what would otherwise be a debilitating case of degenerative disc disease. I am missing two discs in my spine."

And some people use the plant purely for enjoyment. Adam, a 22-year-old personal trainer from Lake Worth who asked to use a pseudonym, says he used to abuse Roxicodone ? a powerful narcotic ? weed, and booze before discovering kratom.

"You get nice, pleasurable effects ? physical and mental," he says. "I've pushed the limits with some very large doses, like 50 grams or something. I'd liken it to a waking dream state. My head got fuzzy and I nodded off. But it's not a hallucinogen or deliriant."

Yet as both medical and recreational interest have picked up in recent years, law enforcement has taken notice. A few countries have already outlawed kratom, including Australia in 2003 and Denmark in 2009. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has classified it as a "drug of concern," the first step toward eventually prohibiting it.

Pint of Brew W?rks Neurotic Blonde Ale

Last night we went to the inaugural edition of Brew W?rks Brewing Company?s Sunday Conversation Series with Brewmaster Michael McMahon. I would expect it to grow, but we had a lovely time as it was only 6 of us (3 couples) which made it easy to converse sitting around a table.

The conversation(s) was great and included beer trends and styles, whether the drinking public or brewer(ie)s drive the trends, recipes, assorted processes in beer/cider/mead making, water quality and other testing issues, food, Mexico, reasons for coming to Bend?all of us are fairly recent arrivals?places we?ve lived and worked before, and on and on. It began at 6 pm and we left a little around 8:45 and the others were still at it.

There were food and drink specials?although I never knew what they actually were, nor did I ask. In the end, we got 20% taken off our bill though so it didn?t really matter what the specifics were.

Brew W?rks Pub features 6 taps of Brew W?rk beers and 6 guest taps and an assortment of great food.

Mike hopes to do this every week and would like to get more people to come and chat. It really was laid back and inviting. I even got a business card and invite to come by the brewery and check things out, with the pleasant caveat that I might be put to work. Sounds fair to me.

So if you are a home brewer or not (I?m not. Yet.), beer aficionado or simply interested in chatting about beer and other topics over good beer and food on a Sunday evening then do check out Brew W?rks Brewing Company?s Sunday Conversation Series at the Old Mill Brew W?rks Pub, 6 pm to ?.

Hope to see you there soon!

Olfactory Overload Causes White Smell

60-Second Science

Combining a wide variety of odors gives rise to a nondescript scent, just as combining colors of many wavelengths generates white light. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Your morning coffee. A baking pie. That turkey in the oven. There are some smells you just can?t get enough of. But mix them and other scents all together and you get, well, nothing much.

According to a new study, a mash-up of 20 or 30 different odors gives you something entirely nondescript: almost a non-smell, if you will. The finding appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Tali Weiss et al, Perceptual convergence of multi-component mixtures in olfaction implies an olfactory white]

If you?ve ever taken physics, you might remember that combining colors of many different wavelengths generates light that?s white. And blending sounds of many different frequencies produces white noise.

Well, researchers got to wondering whether there?s an equivalent phenomenon for olfaction: call it ?white smell.? So they whipped up various combinations of 80 distinct chemicals and had volunteers take a whiff. When the olfactory ingredient list topped 30, one cocktail smelled pretty much the same as any other, even when the mixtures didn?t have a single ingredient in common.

The scent was not unpleasant. A professional perfumer called it ?aromatic,? which is like saying that the light was, well, light. So enjoy the smells of the holiday season. But try not to sniff too many at once.

?Karen Hopkin

interactivity serial: orpitasingh: Horse Racing History | recreation and ...

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world's major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire's decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.

Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today's horse racing breeds.

As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport's continued well being.

All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. The facility to bet and earn cash legally from the result of horse races has been a core part of this sport's appeal and a major factor behind its survival as a sport with a presence.

Citi Comes Out With Big Bullish Call On Apple - Business Insider

Ap Image of Tim Cook, Photo illustration by Jay Yarow

One of the big calls of the day: Citi is out with a 'Buy' rating on Apple and a price target of of $675/share. That's about $100 per share or 20% above the current price.

Here are the key points of the call, made by Glen Yueng, Walter H. Pritchard, and Jim Suva.

  • The company's pullback is consistent with other big selloffs in the company's history. Those were then typically followed by rallies of 20 to 50%.
  • The selloff is consistent with other large companies that had achieved a size of 4% of the S&P, although those other companies were starting with a larger multiple, so Apple has some downside protection.
  • There are clear risks due to A) size and b) the growth of low-end/low-margin phones, but there is still opportunity for the company.
  • Tablets, in particular, remain a huge opportunity.
  • They point to this chart to show how young and huge the tablet market is (click to enlarge)
  • Despite the rapid growth in tables, the opportunity is enormous, with the total industry growing at 32% per year through 2015.
  • Even in smartphones, the industry will grow globally by 26% per year through 2015, though again, there are risks to Apple on the low end.
  • As for the estimates the lead to the call, they write: "Our target price for Apple is $675, based on the implied multiples derived from growth and value regressions of a sample of large cap technology companies. We believe our methodology reflects the multiples investors ascribe to large cap technology companies. We have found the market is paying an FY2 earnings multiple of 7.23x (Sales Growth %) + 12.51 and price-to-book multiple of -0.058x (ROE) + 4.351. For Apple, our FY2014 sales growth estimate of 17.0% yields an implied P/FY2 earnings multiple of 13.74x. We multiply our FY2014 GAAP EPS estimate of $58.99 by the growth multiple for an implied share price of $810. Our FY2014 ROE estimate of 28.72% yields an implied P/BV 2.69x. We multiply our FY2014 tangible BV/share estimate of $199.76 by the value multiple for an implied share price of $537. We equally weigh our growth and value implied targets to derive an initial target of $674, which we round to $675.
The implied multiples, based on our FY14 EPS/book value estimates are 11.4x FY14 EPS of $58.99 and 3.4x FY14 ending book value of $199.76. This compares to the S&P 500?s multiples of 12.4x earnings and 2.1x book value."

PFT: Seattle CBs facing suspensions for PEDs

New York Giants quarterback Manning passes under pressure by the Green Bay Packers during the first quarter of their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

The arm looked rested.

So did the legs.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning bounced back from a rough stretch before the bye, but the truth is, he wasn?t all that different than he always has been.

He?s always been pretty good, even if he hasn?t been as well-regarded as others.

Manning led the Giants to a clean and thorough 38-10 thrashing of the Packers, to improve to 7-4 on the season.

He was 16-of-30 passing for 249 yards and three touchdowns, and showed some nerve (if not excellent judgement) by rushing for a first down early, and not sliding.

It was the kind of night he needed after a rough stretch before the bye. He used the time off to rest his arm (which, for the record, seemed fine) and clear his head by watching classing movies, such as ?Road House.? Like Patrick Swayze?s character Dalton, who people constantly underestimate by saying ?I thought you?d be bigger,? Manning?s had a harder time fighting perceptions than opposing defenses.

Manning threw his 200th career touchdown pass in the third quarter, passing Phil Simms for most in Giants franchise history. Simms can parse it however he chooses, the guy who spent his career being the little brother is elite.

And if he?s not, it?s the definition of the word that needs a second look.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. As long as Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, there?s a ceiling on how often you want the ball out of his hands.

But there?s a difference between not wanting to run and not being able to. The Packers are stuck on not being able to.

Having a philosophy is fine. But there will be nights when good teams can game-plan your strengths out of your hands, and you have to have a Plan B. The Packers Plan B is simply ?throw some more? and that didn?t get them anywhere.

2. Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell has interviewed for head coaching jobs before.

He will again, and the Giants better enjoy him while they can.

Fewell (who was the runner-up to Ron Rivera for the Carolina job two years ago, and might have another chance soon) had the Giants defense humming after the bye week, constantly throwing new looks at the Packers.

He opened the game in a three-safety set, with the return of Kenny Phillips. That Stevie Brown had played well in Phillips? absence made it reasonable, but they weren?t through tweaking. At one point, they threw safety Will Hill out there with Phillips, Brown and Antrel Rolle.

Coupled with the sheer talent they have up front, that gives Fewell the ability to tinker, and he?s proving he knows how to move the pieces around.

Phillips wasn?t able to finish the game with a knee injury, so Fewell?s ability to improvise will be tested again. He?s up to it.

3. In the third quarter, the Giants dropped Rodgers for the 36th time this season.

That?s the same number he absorbed last season, and there are five more games left to play.

The Packers line has been a hash all year, but losing right tackle Bryan Bulaga might have been a last-straw situation, putting multiple guys in bad positions.

In addition to getting some guys well, the Packers need to invest in blockers this offseason, which could add some balance to the offense as well as keeping Rodgers on his feet if he?s going to throw on practically every play.

4. Maybe practice is overrated.

Ahmad Bradshaw, who basically shows up for work on Sunday, ran well Sunday night. Taking the screen pass 59 yards early was one thing, but the burst he showed on his 13-yard touchdown run made him look like a guy who was tired of losing short-yardage carries to Andre Brown.

Bradshaw?s foot issues have obviously robbed him of some of his burst, but he can still get the job done, thanks in part to the fact they?re willing to use him smartly.

5. Perhaps Packers coach Mike McCarthy was giving his kicker a chance to hit a home run, to regain some confidence.

But letting embattled Mason Crosby try his first one from 55 yards in a stadium not known for its consistent conditions wasn?t the best bet to get him back on tack.

Naturally, Crosby missed.

He entered the game 11-of-18 on field goals this season, having missed five of his previous 10. He came back to hit a 28-yarder, but he?s well off his career pace, and you wonder how many chances he?ll get.

It also gave the Giants a short field, and they scored in a hurry to go up 14-7 in the first quarter, and they never looked back.

Obama In 2004: 'We're Not Fighting Terrorists, We're Fighting People Who Engage In Terrorism'

During a November 2004 reading and Q&A session to promote his memoir, "Dreams From My Father," President Obama, then a senator-elect, detailed his views on the motivations behind terrorism and the role U.S. foreign policy plays in such situations.

The comments, unearthed by MSNBC's "Up W/Chris Hayes," came when Obama was asked about terrorism at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in New York City. In his answer, Obama advocated for more of a "soft power" approach, or using attraction rather than coercion or force when dealing with foreign powers.

"Ultimately, terrorism is a tactic. We're not fighting terrorists, we're fighting people who engage in terrorism, but have a whole host of rationales and excuses for why they do this," Obama said. "And to the extent that we can change the sense of opportunity in many of these countries, we can change the manner in which we function in these countries in more positive, proactive ways, then we're not going to eliminate terrorism entirely but we're at least going to be able to make more of a dent than if all we're resorting to is military firepower."

Eight years later, Obama's past comments are particularly notable in the context of his approach to counterterrorism as president. As The Huffington Post's Joshua Hersh reported, Obama's response to terrorism -- particularly through the use of drone strikes -- will be a major challenge in his second term:

As it stands now, the Obama administration, which vastly stepped up the use of drones and targeted killings over the past four years, has done little to assuage the concerns of outsiders about the program's legality or utility. Indeed, the drone program's components are so secret that the administration routinely refuses to acknowledge that it even exists.

In a second term, that stonewalling may no longer be possible, particularly as new questions are raised about whether the program is legal, or if it even works. The fact that administration officials have offered justifications for the program in narrow speeches and interviews only adds to that sense of inevitability.

"It's very unclear what the United States is actually doing in Yemen other than they carry out bombings and people on the ground are dying," said Gregory Johnsen, an expert on Al Qaeda in Yemen and the author of a new book on the subject. "Who's dying, whether or not they're actually Al Qaeda -- we just don't know."

Obama's 2004 comments have resurfaced just days after deadly fighting between Israel and Hamas temporarily halted in a ceasefire agreement. Some, including the Jerusalem Fund's Yousef Munayyer, have argued that American policies toward Israel and Palestine have sent the wrong message about using violence.

"The failure of America?s approach toward the Israelis and the Palestinians, much like its flawed policies toward the region in general, is founded on the assumption that American hard power, through support for Israel and other Middle Eastern governments, can keep the legitimate grievances of the people under wraps," Munayyer wrote in a New York Times op-ed. "By constantly condemning Palestinian armed resistance, and failing to condemn Israeli settlement expansion and repression of nonviolent Palestinian dissent, the message the United States is sending the Palestinian people is this: All resistance to occupation is illegitimate."

Prior to the ceasefire agreement, Obama said the United States is "fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself."

The full report will air on Sunday's edition of "Up W/Chris Hayes."

Olam Sues Muddy Waters and Founder After Accounting Questions

Olam International Ltd. (OLAM), the world?s second-largest rice trader, sued investment firm Muddy Waters LLC and its founder Carson Block for defamation after they questioned the commodity supplier?s accounting methods.

Bloomberg reports that Block?s comments in London at a hedge fund conference on November 19th were malicious falsehoods, Olam said in a lawsuit filed in the Singapore High Court Wednesday. The company sought unspecified damages, costs, and an injunction against republication of the comments.

A war of words between Olam and Block began when the Muddy Waters research director accused the Singapore-based company of booking profits on transactions before it?s clear how they would work out over time. Olam Chief Executive Officer Sunny Verghese said on November 20th the statements were designed to panic shareholders of the company, which is also one of the top three coffee traders globally.

'Whatever that has happened, it had some serious impact on Olam, its share price, and investors', Leng Seng Choon, an analyst at DMG & Partners Securities in Singapore, said by phone.

"Rise of the Guardians" Barrier-Breaker: The First African-American to Direct a CG Animation Film

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Peter Ramsey didn't just have the pressure of making his feature directing debut on an $145 million tentpole film, he also had to deal with the expectations that came with being a barrier-breaker.

By sliding behind the camera on DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" Ramsey made history as the first African-American to helm a major CG animated film.

"Rise of the Guardians," a sort of "Avengers" for the fairy-tale set, opened Wednesday. It tells the story of a group of mythological heroes like Santa Claus (voiced by Alec Baldwin), Jack Frost (Chris Pine) and the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) who team up to prevent the Nightmare King (Jude Law) from plunging children around the world into a state of despair and hopelessness. The film is an adaptation of a popular series of children's books by William Joyce.

Ramsey talked with TheWrap about the responsibility of being a role model, the need to inject a little darkness into children's entertainment and the possibility of a "Guardians" sequel.

What does it mean to be the first African American to direct a CG movie on this scale?

I really wasn't thinking, "Oh, I'm a pioneer" when I first got the project. It wasn't until my mom and dad saw an article that mentioned that fact - and I saw that my dad had tears in his eyes - that it really snapped back to me and I realized this is kind of a big deal. That's the way it is any time some hurdle falls away.

I grew up in South-Central L.A. at a time before there was Spike Lee or John Singleton, so there was really no conception that I could make films. It's super fulfilling that kids growing up like I did can now have it permanently in mind that it's a possibility for them.

What films inspired your approach to the film?

I always knew that I wanted to make a fun, action-packed, big, epic fantasy movie rather than a quaint little fairy tale. So I thought of "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter," where there were big ensemble casts. But stylistically I also thought of Michael Powell's "Black Narcissus." I really wanted Santa's world to have the same dreamlike feel with bold, striking visuals.

There are some really dark elements in the film. Were you worried about it becoming too scary?

It's important that we acknowledge the existence of some darkness in the world. Part of the point of the film is to say that these characters are real because kids believe in them, that kids know fear, too. We didn't want to present a world that was free of the shadow that the Guardians fight, because they are using imagination to combat fear and hopelessness.

What drew you to the material?

For me, it was just hearing about Bill Joyce's notion that all these characters are real and knew each other and had a common purpose.

It seemed like it had this epic fantasy, "Lord of the Rings" potential.

And when I started looking at what Bill had done, I was blown away. The mythologies are so wild and ornate. It's an entirely new universe, and our movie just scratches the surface. We just started to go down the rabbit hole.

I'm beginning to smell "franchise." Would you want to direct the sequels?

Yeah, I would love to. I've fallen in love with the characters. I feel like there's plenty of fertile ground for more good stories. There's more opportunities to push it further. I almost wish I could do the first feature again, to do it more justice.

You are self-taught, no? You came into this industry not as a director, but as a storyboard artist, is that correct?

Yeah, I am. It's the old thing about how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. I've been drawing ever since I was 3. But I wanted to be a comic-book artist, and it was not until quite a bit later that I realized I could work in the movie business.

I stumbled into story boarding through a lucky confluence of things. I realized the work I was doing for comics was similar to helping directors visualize a story. I took maybe a couple of film history classes in college, but I couldn't afford to make films in film school. I needed to get in on the fringes of the industry to get the on the job training I needed to become a director.

Did you have a favorite Guardian?

If I had to say one, it would be North. It was great to give him a real presence, and casting Alec did a lot to help that. It was slightly unexpected, but it feels so right. I would just love to hang out with that guy and it helps that he reminds me of Guillermo del Toro.

Postcard mailed during WWII arrives at NY home

ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) ? A postcard mailed nearly 70 years ago has finally arrived at the former upstate New York home of the couple who sent it.

The postcard was sent July 4, 1943, from Rockford, Ill., to sisters Pauline and Theresa Leisenring in Elmira (el-MY'-ruh).

Their brother, George Leisenring, was stationed at Rockford's Medical Center Barracks at Camp Grant, an Army post during World War II. Their parents were visiting him when they mailed the postcard home.

The postcard reads in part, "Dear Pauline and Theresa, We arrived safe, had a good trip, but we were good and tired."

Elmira's Star-Gazette newspaper reports (http://stargaz.tt/R2Ou5H ) the postcard arrived last week at the family's former home, where a different family now lives.

A postal official says the postcard may have been found by someone outside the postal service and placed in the mail.
