1 killed, 8 wounded in grenade attack in Rwanda

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) ? A police official in Rwanda says a grenade blast has killed one person and wounded eight.

The attack happened in a busy area of Kigali, the capital, as people returned home from work Tuesday evening.

A police spokesman, Theos Badege, called the blast an isolated incident and not the act of a terror network. Badege said one person was killed and eight were wounded.

Rwanda saw a series of grenade blasts in 2010 but the capital hasn't seen any since then.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Film fans can already mark their calendars for the Academy Awards in 2014 and 2015.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that next year's Oscar ceremony will be held March 2. The 2015 trophies will be handed out Feb. 22.

The Screen Actors Guild and the Producers Guild of America each pushed up their 2014 awards ceremonies to the weekend of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, on Jan. 18 and 19, respectively.

The Directors Guild will present its annual awards on Jan. 25, 2014. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has yet to announce when its Golden Globe Awards ceremony will be held.

Nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 16, 2014, more than six weeks before the ceremony.

The Academy Awards in both 2014 and 2015 will be presented at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and broadcast live on ABC.

Will Obama's visit help 'turn the page' for Israel and Palestine?

Obama has said he will not bring any new initiatives to try to revive long-dormant peace talks and has instead come to?Israel?and the?Palestinian territories?for simple consultations.

Arriving in?Israel?on Wednesday, the main focus of initial discussions with Prime Minister?Benjamin Netanyahu?appeared to be pressing regional concerns, primarily Iran's nuclear ambitions and the civil war in neighbouring?Syria.

After repeated run-ins with Netanyahu during?Obama's first term in office, the mood between the two men appeared to be much warmer, angering Palestinians, who blame the 2010 collapse of U.S.-backed peace negotiations on the Israeli leader's expansion of Jewish settlements on land where they want their state.

Obama?is to address the decades-old conflict in talks with Palestinian President?Mahmoud Abbas?and also in a keynote speech just hours later to a large audience of carefully screened Israeli students in?Jerusalem.

But after the lofty ambitions of his first term, when he appointed a special envoy to the?Middle East?on his very first day in charge and said peacemaking was a priority, it was clear that?Obama has now set the bar significantly lower.

"I will consider this a success if, when I go back on Friday, I am able to say to myself I have a better understanding of what the constraints are," he told a joint news conference on Wednesday, standing alongside Netanyahu.

The three-day visit is?Obama's first to?Israel?and the Israeli-occupied?West Bank?since entering the?White House?in 2009, and the inaugural foreign trip of a second and final four-year term that began in January.

Sporadic protests flared in the?West Bank?and?Gaza Strip?this week, with Palestinians accusing?Obama of not doing enough to halt Israeli settlement-building on land seized in the 1967?Middle East?war.

In 2009,?Obama bluntly told?Israel?it had to halt settlement construction, but he later backed away from the demand and made no mention of the enclaves on Wednesday.

Posters depicting?Obama were defaced in the?West Bank?cities of?Ramallah?and Bethlehem earlier this week and anti-U.S. sentiment bubbled up on social media.

"Do Not Enter," said one poster put up on Facebook, showing Obama's face with a red line crossed through it. "The people of Palestine do not welcome you here."

Eighteen workers trapped underground at Polish mine

KRAKOW, Poland (Reuters) - Eighteen miners are trapped underground in a Polish copper mine after an earthquake caused a cave-in, mine operator KGHM said.

"The newest information is that 18 miners are trapped, four people have walked out earlier on their own," KGHM said in a statement after earlier news mentioned 17 workers trapped.

The miners are trapped 600 meters (yards) below ground at the Rudna mine, about 400 km (249 miles) southwest of the Polish capital, and there has been no contact with them for two hours, KGHM spokesman Dariusz Wyborski said.

"There was a quake in the Rudna mine," Wyborski said. "The rescue operation is difficult because huge amounts of rocks have to be removed."

There was no contact with the trapped miners because the tremor cut communication lines, the company said.

The mine is in the Silesia region, near Poland's borders with Germany and the Czech Republic. It has been in operation since 1974. The operator, state-controlled KGHM, is Europe's second-biggest copper producer.

Poland has large numbers of mines, mostly in the heavily industrialized Silesia region. In 2006, a gas explosion at a coal mine in the region killed 23 miners.

Montgomery County natives on lacrosse team bus crash that killed coach

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) ? Police are investigating what caused a bus carrying a college women's lacrosse team to veer off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and crash into a tree, killing a pregnant coach, her unborn child and the driver.

Seton Hill University team players - including?Rachel Hilbert of Perkiomenville and Nicole Rossi of Collegeville - and coaches were among 23 people aboard when the bus crashed Saturday morning. The team was headed to an afternoon game at Millersville University, about 50 miles from the crash site in central Pennsylvania.

Head coach Kristina Quigley, 30, of Greensburg died of her injuries at a hospital, Cumberland County authorities said. Quigley was about six months pregnant and her unborn son didn't survive. The bus driver, Anthony Guaetta, 61, of Johnstown, died at the scene.

Two victims flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center remained there Sunday, but no information was released about their identities or conditions. A woman was in satisfactory condition at Holy Spirit Hospital in Carlisle in Camp Hill and was expected to be discharged later Sunday. All others aboard the bus were taken to hospitals as a precaution, but almost all were treated and released.

The front side of the bus, which was towed from the scene Saturday night, was shorn away, and the vehicle was left resting upright about 70 yards from the road at the bottom of a grassy slope.

Police couldn't immediately say what had caused the crash.

Both Saturday's game and a Sunday home game were canceled after the crash, and Seton Hill, a Catholic liberal arts school of about 2,500 students near Pittsburgh, said a memorial Mass was planned for Sunday night on campus. The school is also offering grief counseling to students.

Duquesne University women's lacrosse coach Mike Scerbo remembered Quigley as a warm, outgoing person who immediately impressed him when he hired her to be an assistant during the 2008 season.

Quigley, a Duquesne alum, spent just one season under Scerbo before moving to South Carolina to start Erskine College's NCAA Division II program.

"In that time, I really saw how much passion she had to be a coach, and how much she enjoyed working with the kids," Scerbo said. "She was a teacher, and she wanted to help kids grow and learn, not just about the sport, but about life."

She spent three years at Erskine before taking the top job at Seton Hill for the 2012 season. She stayed in touch with Scerbo, often seeking his guidance and showing up at the Duquesne alumni game.

"She was a very happy person, very passionate about life, about her players, about her job and most importantly about her family," Scerbo said.

Quigley, a native of Baltimore, was married and had a young son, Gavin, the school said.

The bus operator, Mlaker Charter & Tours, of Davidsville, Pa., is up-to-date on its inspections, which include bus and driver safety checks, said Jennifer Kocher, a spokeswoman for the state Public Utility Commission, which regulates bus companies.

The agency's motor safety inspectors could think of no accidents or violations involving the company that would raise a red flag, she said, though complete safety records were not available Saturday.

On Tuesday, another bus carrying college lacrosse players from a Vermont team was hit by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the car died.

Kyocera Brio (Virgin Mobile)

Where have all the feature phones?gone? Virgin Mobile now has an impressive stable of smartphones, but pickings are slim when it comes to simple phones that work with the inexpensive payLo plan. The $39.99 Kyocera Brio will let you talk and text without breaking the bank, but not much more than that. If your needs are very basic, it'll suffice, but there are better choices available.

Editors' Note: The Kyocera Brio models on?Sprint?and Virgin are virtually identical, so we're sharing a lot of material between these two reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

Design, Call Quality, and Plans
The Kyocera Brio measures 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs just 3.7 ounces. Despite the light weight and entirely plastic build, it feels like a quality device. The back is matte grey while the front and sides are shiny. The 2.2-inch 240-by-320 pixel TFT LCD looks bright and sharp, though viewing angles are quite narrow.

A navigation pad sits directly beneath the phone's display, along with Send and End keys, and four function buttons. Below those is a four-row, physical QWERTY keyboard. Though the keys are tiny, they are raised and angled for optimal separation. They are also extra-clicky, which makes typing a breeze. Users that do a lot of messaging will be happy with the Brio.

The Brio is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900MHz) handset. That means it is not a 3G phone, and there is no Wi-Fi, so you can expect painfully slow data rates if you plan to use the Web browser. Reception is average, and voice quality is decent overall. Voices sound clear in the phone's earpiece, though they are extremely thin. Calls made with the phone sound clear and natural, and noise cancellation is just average. The Brio paired easily with a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset and calls sounded very good. Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth without training. Battery life was okay, at 5 hours and 14 minutes of talk time, but somewhat disappointing considering this phone doesn't even support 3G.

The Brio is available with payLo plans that start at $20 per month for 400 minutes, to $30 per month for 1,500 minutes, 1,500 text messages, and 30MB of data, or $40 per month for unlimited talk, text, and 50MB of data. With prices like that and the low upfront price, the Brio makes for a great backup line. But if you're interested in media, it's a little too barebones to be your only phone.

Interface and Apps
Menu design is extremely minimal. The phone's home screen has links to your messaging and contacts menus, but is otherwise empty. Pressing the center function key will bring up the rest of your options. A 12-icon grid is arranged with shortcuts to the Web browser, Photos, Settings, and Tools, among some other options you are less likely to use. App selection is minimal. The standards are there, such as an alarm clock, calculator, calendar, stopwatch, and world clock, but that's it. You can download more from Virgin, but the selection isn't compelling.

The Access NetFront 3.5.1 browser delivers decent WAP pages. Unfortunately, slow data speeds mean those pages load at a positively glacial pace. I certainly don't recommend this phone if you want to surf the Web.

The Brio excels at text messaging and email. As previously mentioned, the QWERTY keyboard is well-built and comfortable, making it easy to type long messages. The Brio's free built-in email capabilities can link up with AIM, AOL, Comcast, Gmail, Windows Live, and Yahoo Mail, as well as POP/IMAP accounts, alerting you when you have new messages. Gaining access to my email was fast and easy; I was signed into my Gmail account within seconds. It was also able to gain access to my Google calendar, which showed me a list of upcoming events I had scheduled.

Multimedia and Conclusions
Multimedia options are poor. You get 10MB of free internal memory on the Brio, along with an empty microSD card slot underneath the battery cover. My 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. But the thing is, you won't need to expand the memory on this phone?there's nothing you can do with it. The Brio doesn't support music or video playback of any kind. That means the nonstandard headphone jack isn't too much of a big deal, since there's nothing you can listen to.

There's a 1.3-megapixel camera on the back of the Brio, but the quality is terrible. Photos taken with it have some decent color, but mostly look soft and blurry. You can transfer photos to your computer via Bluetooth, email, or microSD card, but chances are you won't be saving them.

If you just want a phone to make calls and send messages, the Brio isn't a bad option. It's better than the keyboarded Kyocera S2300, which has shorter battery life and a nearly unusable camera. But I suspect that users who want a full keyboard for texts and email will want some additional features as well. If that's the case, you're better off with the Samsung Montage. It too is a simple messaging phone, but it has a larger, slide-out keyboard, a better camera, and you can listen to music with it. We haven't reviewed the Samsung M575 yet, but it looks like an updated version of the Samsung Restore. In that case, it should perform similarly to the Montage, though 3G support means it will hit faster data speeds.

Venezuelans flood streets for another Chavez coffin parade

By Andrew Cawthorne and Girish Gupta

CARACAS (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans were on the streets again on Friday at a funeral parade for Hugo Chavez amid opposition protests that the government was exploiting his death to win the election.

Chavez's remains were transported for about 12 miles through Caracas from an army academy to a military museum on a hillside where the former soldier launched his political career with a failed coup in 1992.

The events were the culmination of 10 days of official mourning in the South American OPEC nation led by the flamboyant socialist president for 14 years until his death from cancer.

A state funeral was held a week ago.

"You are a giant," his daughter Maria Gabriela said in an emotional religious service before the procession began.

"Fly freely and breathe deep with the winds of the hurricane. We will care for your fatherland and defend your legacy. You will never leave, your flame is in our hands."

Though his remains will for now be placed in the museum on the edge of the populous January 23 neighborhood - arguably the most militantly pro-Chavez zone in the country - there was still doubt over his final resting place.

The government wanted to embalm Chavez "for eternity" in the style of Soviet leaders Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin and China's Mao Zedong. But embarrassingly, officials said the process should have started earlier and confirmed on Friday that it had been ruled out.

A Russian medical team told the government the body would have to be taken to Russia for seven to eight months to carry out the procedure, Venezuela's information minister said.

Parliament had been due to debate a motion this week to amend the constitution so that Chavez's body could be buried in the National Pantheon, close to the remains of his idol and South American independence hero Simon Bolivar.

The constitution states that honor can only be accorded to leaders 25 years after their death.

But the debate was delayed amid talk Chavez's corpse might instead be taken to his hometown Sabaneta, in the Venezuelan "llanos," or plains, to fulfill his oft-stated wish to lie alongside the grandmother who raised him in a mud-floor home.

Crowds of red-shirted "Chavistas" lined the streets for Friday's parade. Some wore headbands with the name of acting President Nicolas Maduro, who was picked by Chavez as his preferred successor. He is running in an April 14 vote.

"Chavez, I promise you, my vote is for Maduro," read the headbands, repeating a slogan at pro-government rallies.

"I've got 500 and I'm going to sell them all easily. Chavez left Maduro in charge and he will be president," said Miguel Angel, 43, selling the headbands.

'PERVERSE PROSELYTISM'

The opposition, whose presidential candidate Henrique Capriles faces a tough battle to beat Maduro amid so much emotion over Chavez, says the government is mawkishly protracting the mourning and exploiting his coffin as a campaign prop.

Capriles, a 40-year-old state governor who views Brazil as his political and economic model, plans to begin campaigning around the country over the weekend.

"We urge those indiscriminately using the president's name for the capture of votes to halt this perverse method of electoral proselytism," an opposition communique said.

"Let's have a decent campaign, without unfair advantages or abuses of power."

That, many analysts say, looks unlikely given the government's vastly superior financial resources and pro-government supporters' dominance of state institutions.

Fighting back against that impression, however, the government says Capriles is a well-financed puppet of both Venezuela's powerful and wealthy elite and the U.S. government.

The deification of Chavez in death has taken surreal turns.

Maduro suggested that in heaven Chavez helped persuade Christ to choose a Latin American pope.

And the state oil company PDVSA has been distributing a flyer titled "Chavez Crucified" amplifying the government's accusation that he may have been infected with cancer by his enemies.

"Chavez is a Christ, he suffered for his people, he extinguished himself in their service, he suffered his own C Calvary, he was assassinated by imperialists, he died young ... and he performed miracles in life," it said.

That level of eulogy is drawing scorn in some circles for a man who, though loved by millions of Venezuela's poor for his welfare policies and down-to-earth style, was also hated as an authoritarian bully by large segments of society.

The election campaign has started in a nasty atmosphere, with both camps accusing each other of dirty tricks, and Capriles and Maduro landing highly personalized blows.

Photos of guns aimed at TVs showing Capriles have been circulating, while an opposition newspaper this week juxtaposed a photo of Maduro next to Hitler giving a Nazi salute.

Maduro, a 50-year-old former bus driver who is trumpeting his working-class roots like Chavez, has a solid lead over Capriles of more than 10 percentage points, according to two recent opinion polls. Both came before Chavez's death.

At stake in the upcoming election is not only the future of Chavez's leftist revolution but also the continuation of Venezuelan oil subsidies and other aid crucial to the economies of leftist allies around Latin America, from Cuba to Bolivia.

Venezuela boasts the world's largest oil reserves.

Diabetic medication may protect patients from developing heart failure

Mar. 10, 2013 ? A class of medications commonly prescribed to lower blood sugar in diabetic patients appears to protect them from developing heart failure, according to a study at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

"People with diabetes are at risk for developing heart failure," says Henry Ford researcher and cardiologist David Lanfear, M.D., lead author of the study. "Diabetic adults die of heart disease two to four times more than those without diabetes.

"Our study data suggest that diabetic patients taking a particular class of medications are less likely to develop heart failure," adds Dr. Lanfear.

The results will be presented March 10 at the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting in San Francisco.

There are more than 25 million adults and children in the U.S. with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. The ADA estimates that nearly 80 million people may be pre-diabetic, with nearly two million new cases diagnosed in adults in 2010. In 2007, diabetes contributed to a total of 231,404 deaths.

The retrospective study looked at 4,427 diabetic patients who were taking blood-sugar-lowering medications at Henry Ford Hospital between January 1, 2000 and July 1, 2012. Of these patients, 1,488 were taking GLP-1 medications (glucagon-like peptide-1 analogs and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors) and 2,939 were not.

Over an observation time of 663 days, there were 281 hospitalizations, of which 184 were due to heart failure, and 158 deaths.

Results were adjusted for factors such as gender, age, race, coronary disease, heart failure, duration of diabetes, and the number of anti-diabetic medications, in order to identify the effect specifically attributable to taking GLP-1 medications. The researchers also looked at hospitalizations and deaths from all causes.

Use of GLP1 medications was associated with a reduced risk of hospitalization for heart failure or any other reason, as well as fewer deaths.

"These preliminary results look very promising," says Dr. Lanfear. "However this was a retrospective study and this subject needs further investigation."

Stringer leaving Sony in June, hands over to Hirai

TOKYO (AP) ? Howard Stringer, who fought to bring a divided and struggling Sony Corp. together as the Japanese electronics and entertainment company's first foreign president, is retiring as chairman in June.

He announced his departure in New York in a speech at the Japan Society on Friday, which was confirmed by Tokyo-based Sony on Sunday. His retirement will come at an annual general shareholders' meeting in June.

Stringer, a Welsh-born American and 15-year employee at Sony, became president in 2005, when the once glorious maker behind the Walkman portable player was first starting to get slammed by the flashier Apple Inc. and the nimbler Samsung Electronics Co.

The company, which makes the PlayStation 3 game console as well as "Spider-Man" movies, is still struggling. It has lost money for the last four years, and racked up its biggest loss in its 67-year history for the fiscal year through March 2012.

Stringer said he was ready to retire after handing over the helm last year to Kazuo Hirai. Stringer groomed Hirai, longtime head of Sony's video-game unit, who led its relative success as a brand in the U.S. market, to be his successor.

"I was pleased to hand the reins to Kazuo Hirai last year because I saw in him the right mix of skills to lead Sony, and I knew it was the right time to bring about generational change," Stringer said in the speech.

"Over the course of the past year, he has come into his own and is leading Sony with vision and authority."

Stringer said he will remain busy with charity work in education and medicine, and will continue as chair of the American Film Institute.

Hirai credited Stringer in the next-generation video-format battle by leading the Blu-ray camp, which included Sony, to victory; for pursuing efficiency and cost reductions, and expanding the film and music businesses to become "key profit drivers."

"Howard's unwavering dedication and leadership throughout his tenure as CEO enabled us to form the foundation to overcome huge challenges and the path to future growth," Hirai said in a statement.

"I was able to learn so much from him as a business leader and person, particularly his incomparable ability to inspire and invigorate all of those around him."

Before joining Sony in 1997, Stringer had a 30-year career as a journalist, producer and executive at CBS Inc. His pivotal role was seen as developing strategic links between the entertainment and electronics business ? a plan Sony has pursued for years but is still not fully realized.

While president, Stringer pinpointed as the major problem the divisions within Sony's sprawling empire he disparagingly named "silos." He reorganized the company, ended unprofitable businesses like the robot project and slashed thousands of jobs. He also encouraged collaborations.

Hirai has followed with the same effort under the slogan "One Sony." Sony has recently come out with smartphones and other products that have gotten good reviews. But it is still losing money in its core TV division.

Some critics say playing catch-up with Apple and Samsung isn't enough, and Sony needs to pioneer an entire consumer electronics sector, as it once did with the Walkman.

But Stringer said he was ready to move on.

"A new world is opening up for me, too," he said.

How to Opt Out of Facebook's Creepy New Targeted Ads

Facebook has announced that it's teaming up with four of the world's largest corporate data brokers to "enhance" the ad experience for users. Datalogix, Epsilon, Acxiom, and BlueKai obtain information gathered about users through online means (such as through cookies when users surf the web) as well as through offline means (such as through loyalty cards at supermarkets and product warranty cards). Through the new relationship with Facebook, companies will be able to display advertisements to Facebook users based on data that these data brokers have on individuals. More »

(AP) ? Seth Curry kept burying shots against helpless North Carolina defenders to give No. 3 Duke a big lead, then Mason Plumlee dominated inside to keep the Blue Devils in complete control against their fiercest rival.

This performance was about more than just beating up the Tar Heels. It was the Blue Devils showing they're determined to play their best in March.

Curry hit his first seven shots during Duke's torrid start, helping the Blue Devils cruise to a 69-53 victory Saturday night in a game that was never in doubt.

Curry finished with 20 points, while Plumlee had his best performance in a month with 23 points and 13 rebounds. That duo provided Duke (27-4, 14-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) all the punch it needed to earn a season sweep of the Tar Heels.

"You want to be playing at your best going into the tournament and you can't afford a loss at this point in the season where you're questioning your lineups and what your identity is," Plumlee said. "It was the kind of win we needed going into tournament time."

Duke scored the game's first 14 points, never let UNC (22-9, 12-6) closer than nine and led by 25 points after halftime. The Blue Devils shot 55 percent, including 18 for 26 (69 percent) in a first half that silenced a once-rowdy Smith Center crowd and overwhelmed the once-surging Tar Heels.

If Saturday night was any indication, Duke is ready for next week's ACC tournament in Greensboro and beyond.

Curry and the Blue Devils came out with a shooting display that ran North Carolina right out of the Dean Dome by halftime. Not to mention it turned the latest renewal of the famed rivalry into a colossal dud.

Curry made one 3, hit a scooping layup and banked in a runner during Duke's 6-for-6 start that helped the Blue Devils to a football-esque 14-0 lead.

At one point, he even hit one as he fell backward to the floor, the kind of play that eliminates any doubt about whose night it's going to be.

"Guys set screens for me and I was able to create some space to get shots off, keep the defense off balance, and I was feeling good to start the game," Curry said. "I wanted to come in and set the tone for my team that we could win in this environment."

After Curry made his seventh straight shot, UNC coach Roy Williams practically wandered out near midcourt to shout at his players as they ran down on offense.

"He just toyed with us," Williams said. "He was in complete control on the offensive end."

Curry finished 8 for 13 and Plumlee took over inside by making 10 of 15 shots against the Tar Heels' undersized frontline.

"Seth's performance in the first half, he just the best player on the court," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "In the second half, we had the best player on the court in Mason."

In each of the past two seasons, Duke had won the first meeting only to have UNC win the second to clinch the ACC regular-season title.

That story line was off the table this time. Miami took care of that by beating Clemson for the outright title earlier Saturday. Duke ? which is integrating senior Ryan Kelly back into the lineup after a two-month absence due to a foot injury ? had already clinched the No. 2 seed for the ACC tournament. North Carolina State's loss at Florida State meant the Tar Heels would be the No. 3 seed but could still tie Duke for second in the standings.

Instead, it turned into a reversal of last year's finale at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where the Tar Heels jumped all over the Blue Devils early in a blowout win.

It was the first "Senior Night" loss for Williams as a head coach, both at Kansas and at North Carolina.

UNC had gone 6-1 since going to a four-guard lineup in that first meeting, but the Tar Heels looked rattled once the Blue Devils charged in front and never recovered.

"I wasn't concerned about the score, but I was really concerned about the look on our face," Williams said. "I felt like every shot we took we were hesitant or tight ... but I didn't like the way we looked on every shot we took. We never got out of that hole."

James Michael McAdoo finished with 15 points to lead the Tar Heels despite playing with a bulging disk in his back, but the rest of his teammates did little to help him. The Tar Heels all too often settled for jumpers and didn't seem interested in attacking the rim on the way to shooting just 34 percent.

That included missing their first 11 3-point tries and finishing 1 for 14 from behind the arc, an area where they had thrived since Williams inserted 6-foot-5 sophomore P.J. Hairston into the starting lineup at the 4-spot.

Hairston finished with 14 points on 4-for-12 shooting and hit the Tar Heels' only 3 to cut the deficit to 63-49 at the 5-minute mark. But Quinn Cook answered with two driving baskets, the second a hanging shot that dropped through as the shot clock expired and took back any fleeting momentum North Carolina had built.

Cook scored 12 and completely outplayed UNC freshman point guard Marcus Paige, who regressed from his recent strong play with four points on 1-for-6 shooting and five turnovers.

"We did keep fighting, and we never gave in," Hairston said. "We still played offense and still tried to make shots, and we still tried to do different things on the defensive end to slow them down. They were just making everything they put up."

Palm Top Theater turns your iPhone into a mini-3D display

"Pepper's ghost" isn't the sort of phrase you hear very often at a show like SXSW. In amongst all the latest generation technology, there aren't too many folks discussing hundreds years old optical concepts. But the the idea's a driving force in the Palm Top Theater, an iPhone case that turns smartphone videos into a miniature 3D viewing experience. The peripheral utilizes three small drop down displays -- the rear is a full mirror with two half mirrors in front it, reflecting images from the phone display into what appears to be a three-dimension object -- and really, it a stunning little effect.

The Palm Top requires the use of a proprietary file format that essentially splits the displayed image or video into three parts. The company's providing some video for users, as well as a converter app to make custom footage. The device is available now for around $36 -- not super expensive, though it's hard to see such a device as anything but a niche product, especially since the opening makes for a fairly limited viewing space. It would be extremely cool to see this on a larger space, but in the meantime, you're stuck with a little window into the technology.

Visualized: First photo using ISS-mounted ISERV Pathfinder zooms in on Panama

DNP Visualized First photo from ISSinstalled ISERV Pathfinder

It's been a while since we last heard of the ISERV Pathfinder, an imaging instrument that consists of a camera, telescope and pointing system that was sent up to the International Space Station last July. Now it appears it's safely installed inside the Destiny module on the ISS and has captured its first ever image, seen above, a few weeks ago on February 16th. The high-resolution picture is of the Rio San Pablo, an ecological transition zone that's marked as a protected area by the National Environment Authority of Panama. Captured at three to seven frames per second with about 100 images per pass, photos like these are designed to transmit details of natural disasters and environmental mishaps to developing nations.

Even though NASA Marshall in Huntsville, Alabama is at the helm, it's in cahoots with researchers in Central America, East Africa and the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region to carry out its goal. Of course, they're still in the starting stages at the moment -- a few outstanding issues include the amount of sunlight needed and if the geometry of the ISS window affects the image -- but NASA hopes to open up the ISERV to other scientists in a few months once it has all its kinks worked out. To check out the stunning "first light" picture above in its full resolution, head on over to the source below.
