TOWAMENCIN- How would you feel if your parent worked at North Penn? Would you feel blissful and ecstatic or would daily life at school feel miserable and irate? Would you receive special treatment or be held to a higher standard by all the other teachers? That sounds like it wouldn?t be something you would want right? Take a brief pause: look past all the potential ?negatives? and try to look at the advantages; you might be surprised to find out that it may not be as bad as it seems.

Although it might not be well known, there are many teachers in North Penn whose children attend this school, and many of them have positive outlooks on the proximity between themselves and their children- all in one school.

The list of faculty includes: Dick Beck- Security Officer; Bonnie Berry- Special Ed Assistant; Jane Brady- Special Ed Assistant; Lisa Buccafuri- Nutrition Services Assistant; Dorothy Ruch- Social Studies Teacher; Denise Burlingame- Special Ed Assistant; Melanie Cassar- FCS Teacher; Keith Clauss- Health & Phys Ed Teacher; Michael Fergus- Health & Phys Ed Teacher; Brenda Flannery- Special Ed Assistant; Sally Kauffman- Nurse; Judith Lassen-Hoffman- Business Ed Teacher; Sadie McDonald- Custodian; Margrit Marino- Mathematics Teacher; Judith McGuriman- Guidance Counselor; Kimberly Milliorn- Special Ed Assistant; Janet Millonig,-Special Ed Assistant; Kathleen Noce- FCS Teacher; Lisa Tyree- Special Ed Assistant; William Walters- Nutrition Services Assistant; Christopher Young- Physics Teacher.

Parent and child is one of the most crucial relationships, especially during the teenage years. In most cases, you learn valuable knowledge from your parents or guardians more then a lot of what? you learn from school. They teach you the very basic fundamentals of life, something that you enter school already knowing. However, as the era of technology advances, it often becomes a massive hindrance between parents and children. Many parents? relationships with their children take an unfortunate hiatus and the connection has been severed. Many parents find it very difficult to learn what is going on in the daily affairs of today?s teenagers.

So what happens if the parent happens to be a teacher in the same school building? Does that inside scoop help or hinder their relationship? We took time to ask a few of our very own teachers here at North Penn. We asked them all the same basic questions: if their relationship has been affected by them working in their child?s school, as well as the advantages or disadvantages that come along with being in the same building together.

Mr. Chris Young: ?[As well as being her dad] I?m also her teacher for a class so, not only will she get a zero on her homework but she will get grounded also. I think it?s very convenient as well as helpful for the both of us.?

Mrs. Kathy Noce: ?I don?t see him often because he doesn?t take any of my classes but it?s good for him incase he needs anything last minute, or missed the bus going home, I can always be there to give him a ride. It doesn?t bother him because we?re such a big school that me being in the same building doesn?t have an effect on him.?

Mr. Keith ?Clauss: ?If anything it has made our relationship stronger, we get to spend more time together. He says hi to me in the hallways so I don?t think he minds it. An advantage is I get to hear just about everything that he does or happens to him, but the disadvantage is I get to hear everything he does,? he joked.

Mrs. Margrit Marino: ?We get to spend more time together, I see her in the hallways as well as lunch and I get to know her friends better. An advantage is I know her teachers and they know me, there are no disadvantages, we get a long very well so it?s easy. She doesn?t abuse it or ask me for passes or anything like that, she just comes in says hi and leaves.?

Mrs. Judy Hoffman: ?If [our relationship] was affected it has been for the better, I get to see her more often than I would if I were working somewhere else. I am able to know who her friends are and get involved in her culture as well as some of the activities she?s involved with. I can make sure she?s meeting her deadlines, because I have the inside track, and I am able to check the morning announcements, and talk to her coaches and teachers. It?s great for the both of us.?

Mr. Dick Beck: ?Our relationship hasn?t been affected by it at all. It has its advantages, I can give them rides, their teachers can also be easily contacted as well contact me if there is an issue.?

By working in their child?s school, a new channel of communication is opened up that may not have been available if they worked elsewhere. With kids being more interested in social media and texting, it becomes even harder for some parents to have that vital channel of communication. With a job here at North Penn many of the teachers found that it bring more good than bad. We asked what the kids had to say!

Katie Marino: There aren?t really any cons! It?s so nice having her there because I always have somewhere to go when I need help or someone to talk to! She?s easy to get along with so that makes things easier. Also I like seeing her in school because I would miss her if I didn?t get to see her until after school. I have her as a teacher this year too! I really like having her as a teacher but the only bad part is if I don?t do my homework both my teacher and my mom know.

Teacher Margrit Marino and daughter Katie Marino

Tyler Clauss: It?s good and bad to be honest. He keeps me up to date with my work; he definitely keeps me on track. However, the bad part is if I do something wrong, he knows about it, If I get in trouble he knows about it, and if I try to skip or miss something he knows about it.

Teacher Keith Clauss and son Tyler Clauss

Michelle Lassen:??It?s really helpful because she knows the ins and outs of the school. She can help me with a lot of things. It has made our relationship stronger because we get to see each other every single day!?

Teacher Judith Lassen-Hoffman with daughter Michelle Lassen

Alex Noce:??It?s good, I get a ride in the morning, and she can help me if I need help with anything. It enables us to spend more time together every morning and sometimes in the afternoon.?

Teacher ?Kathleen Noce and son Alex Noce

Connor Lawn: ?Now I?m used to it, but it used to be awkward when I was a sophomore because it was my first year in a huge school. But it always gives me that little voice in the back of your head saying you can?t be late or get in trouble or do something stupid, because he?s here in the building and the teachers easily have access to him. He knows everything I do, where I am at all times or where I?m supposed to be at all times.?

Colby Beck:??It?s good when I need him for something, like if I forget something I need. If I have bad grades or do something either way he will find out, or all the teachers especially keep an eye on me.?

Megan Lawn: ?It?s normal to me, we talk when I see him, if I ever forget anything he can easily bring it to me. He gets to know who I?m with a lot of the time, make sure I?m hanging out with the right crowd; he knows all of my friends.?

Security guard Dick Beck with children Colby Beck, Megan Lawn, and Connor Lawn

Hannah Young: ?I think it?s a lot of fun having my dad in the building, especially because I get to have him as a teacher and work with him in class cabinet as well it gives us a lot more to talk about and strengthens our relationship. There?s no disadvantages really except if I get in trouble or get bad grades he knows immediately.?

Teacher Christopher Young and daughter Hannah Young

Tim Schafer's Double Fine may go PC-only with next generation ...

Psychonauts 2

Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts, Costume Quest, Iron Brigade and others, has largely been a console game developer for the past decade, but the high cost of releasing digital games on Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's machines may push it to PC.

When Tim Schafer founded Double Fine more than ten years ago, it was with the intent of breaking into the video game console market. The iconic developer made a name for himself with PC games like Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, but the success of Sony?s PlayStation at the turn of the century indicated that the real money would be in living room game development. So Double Fine focused on consoles and delivered two cultishly adored commercial failures, Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, before turning to downloadable games. Now, with game consoles shrinking in market influence and becoming increasingly PC-like, Double Fine is wondering if it?s going to stay in the console business at all.

?We?d still like to be active in that space, we care about consoles, but unless they open things up a lot more like what we have on Steam? if they opened things up more it would be a more friendly place from our perspective,? Schafer told Polygon, ?We?ve talking to them about this stuff, and you know, they hear us. They?re big companies and they can?t make changes overnight, but I think they?re taking that stuff into consideration. We?ll have to see what happens.?

For a perfect example of how Double Fine has fared better on PCs than on consoles, look at Psychonauts. Microsoft funded the game for development on the original Xbox, but after multiple delays, the game was dropped. Majesco later picked up the game and released it in 2005, but even with a PlayStation 2 port released, the game languished in obscurity. More recently it was released on Steam. ?We?ve looked at the numbers on stuff like Steam. We made more on Psychonauts this year than we ever have before,? said Schafer.

He thinks that games like Psychonauts may thrive better on the next round of consoles, though. ?Our fear was that the next generation was going to be only big AAA games. It was only going to be a place for Call of Duty and Halo. But we?ve talked to [console makers], and told people what things would be hard for teams our size with regards to consoles.?

Schafer points to costs like patches and certification as the sort of console-specific expenses that hamper a small team like Double Fine. The high cost of Microsoft?s patch process on Xbox Live Arcade has forced some developers to forego fixing games altogether. Fez creator Phil Fish said earlier this year that no patch would be released for his game because Microsoft wanted thousands of dollars to release the patch via Xbox Live, an expense that would have been free had Fish released it himself for PCs.

Syrian vice president says neither side can win war

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa said that neither the forces of President Bashar al-Assad nor rebels seeking to overthrow him can win the war which is now being fought on the outskirts of Assad's powerbase in Damascus.

Sharaa, a Sunni Muslim in a power structure dominated by Assad's Alawite minority, has rarely been seen since the Syrian revolt erupted in March 2011 and is not part of the president's inner circle directing the fight against Sunni rebels.

But he is the most prominent figure to say in public that Assad will not win. He was speaking to the pro-Assad al-Akhbar paper in an interview from Damascus which is now hemmed in by rebel fighters to the south.

Assad's forces have used jets and artillery to try to dislodge the fighters from around Damascus but the violence has crept into the heart of the capital and rebels announced on Sunday a new offensive in the central province of Hama.

Sharaa said the situation in Syria, where more than 40,000 people have been killed, was deteriorating and a "historic settlement" was needed to end the conflict, involving regional powers and the U.N. Security Council and the formation of a national unity government "with broad powers".

"With every passing day the political and military solutions are becoming more distant. We should be in a position defending the existence of Syria. We are not in a battle for an individual or a regime," Sharaa was quoted as saying.

"The opposition cannot decisively settle the battle and what the security forces and army units are doing will not achieve a decisive settlement," he told the paper, adding that the insurgents fighting to topple Syria's leadership could plunge it into "anarchy and an unending spiral of violence".

Sources close to the Syrian government say Sharaa had pushed for dialogue with the opposition and objected to the military response to an uprising that began peacefully.

In Damascus, residents said on Monday the army had told people to evacuate the Palestinian district of Yarmouk, suggesting an all-out military offensive on the southern district was imminent.

The centre of the city, largely insulated from the violence for 21 months, is now full of army and vigilante checkpoints and shakes to the sound of regular shelling, residents say.

Queues for bread form at bakeries hours before dawn, as people seek out dwindling supplies, power cuts are increasing and fears are growing that Damascus could descend into chaos.

In a veiled criticism of the crackdown, Sharaa said there was a difference between the state's duty to provide security to its citizens, and "pursuing a security solution to the crisis."

He said even Assad could not be certain where events in Syria were leading, but that anyone who met him would hear that "this is a long struggle...and he does not hide his desire to settle matters militarily to reach a final solution."

CHANGE INEVITABLE

"We realize today that change is inevitable," Sharaa said, but "none of the peaceful or armed opposition groups with their known foreign links can call themselves the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people".

"Likewise the current leadership...cannot achieve change alone after two years of crisis without new partners who contribute to preserving (Syria's) national fabric, territorial unity and regional sovereignty".

Rebels have now brought the war to the capital, without yet delivering a fatal blow to the government. But nor has Assad found the military muscle to oust his opponents from the city.

In Paris, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius of France, one of the powers most insistent that Assad has lost his legitimacy, said: "I think the end is nearing for Bashar al-Assad."

On the ground, rebels said they were launching an operation to seize the central province of Hama to try to link northern rural areas of Syria under their control to the center.

Qassem Saadeddine, a member of the newly established rebel military command, said fighters had been ordered to surround and attack checkpoints across the province. He said forces loyal to Assad had been given 48 hours to surrender or be killed.

"When we liberate the countryside of Hama province ... then we will have the area between Aleppo and Hama liberated and open for us," he told Reuters.

The city of Hama in the province of the same name has a special resonance for anti-Assad activists. In 1982 Hafez al-Assad, father of the current ruler, crushed an uprising in the city, killing up to 30,000 civilians.

In Damascus, activists said fighter jets bombed the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp on Sunday, killing at least 25 people sheltering in a mosque.

The attack was part of a month-old campaign by Assad's forces to eject rebels from positions they are establishing around the capital's perimeter. Yarmouk, to the south, falls within an arc of territory running from the east of Damascus to the southwest from where rebels hope to storm the government's main redoubt.

MOSQUE HIT

Opposition activists said the deaths in Yarmouk, to which refugees have fled from fighting in nearby suburbs, resulted from a rocket fired from a warplane hitting the mosque.

Footage showed bodies and body parts scattered on the stairs of what appeared to be the mosque.

The latest battlefield accounts could not be independently verified due to tight restrictions on media access to Syria.

Syria is home to more than 500,000 Palestinian refugees, most living in Yarmouk, and both Assad's government and the rebels have enlisted and armed Palestinians as the uprising, which began as a peaceful street movement 21 months ago, has mushroomed into a civil war.

After Sunday's air raid, clashes flared between Palestinians from the pro-Assad Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) and rebels including other Palestinian fighters and some PFLP-GC fighters were killed.

In the latest of a string of military installations to fall to the rebels, the army's infantry college north of Aleppo was captured on Saturday after five days of fighting, a rebel commander with the powerful Islamist Tawheed Brigade said.
