Justice Altmas Kabir is new Chief Justice of India

Justice Altmas Kabir, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court, was on Saturday sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of India.

He was administered the oath of the office by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Justice Kabir has succeeds SH Kapadia, who demitted office on Saturday. He will be the Chief Justice of India for nine months, till July 19, 2013.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP leader LK Advani, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav were also present at the swearing in, as were scores of cabinet ministers, including Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Farooq Abdullah.

All the sitting and some former judges of the apex court, Attorney General GE Vahanvati and other law officers of the government too were present.

Born on July 19, 1948, Chief Justice Kabir is only the second Chief Justice, along with his predecessor, to be born in post-independence India.

Chief Justice Kabir is the fourth Muslim to occupy the top position after Chief Justice M Hidayatullah, Chief Justice M Hameedullah and Chief Justice AM Ahmedi.

After doing his MA and LLB, Chief Justice Kabir enrolled as an advocate in 1973 and practised in the district court and the Calcutta High Court.

Chief Justice Kabir was appointed permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on August 06, 1990. Thereafter on March 01, 2005, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

He was elevated as a judge of the apex court September 09, 2005.

It goes to the credit of Chief Justice Kabir that irrespective of the stature of the counsel appearing for the litigant - senior or greenhorn - he would get an equal measure of the court's attention.

Chief Justice Kabir is also instrumental in the design of the additional complex of the apex court that would be coming up at Pragati Maidan, in the site that once housed the famous Appu Ghar.

The building has certain features which make it an amalgamation of all religions traditions within the country.

Chief Justice Kabir said, on the sidelines of the function organised to bid adieu to his predecessor, Chief Justice Kapadia: "I wanted to show that the Supreme Court is a place where all religions have equal respect."

One of the most important cases that Chief Justice Kabir is hearing is the appeal by the Italian government asserting sovereign immunity to its two marines, accused of shooting down two Indian fishermen, mistaking them for pirates.

That incident occurred off the Kochi coast in February this year.

Fox Hires Mark Millar to Oversee Marvel Movies

20th Century Fox Marvel Movie Universe

The Avengers are back in the spotlight this week with its home video release on Tuesday, aiming to break records just as it did in theaters worldwide. Proving that comic book movies are not only still the golden ticket in Hollywood, Marvel Studios demonstrated that just like in the comics, separate stories and characters can be brought together in a shared, interconnected cinematic universe.

The Avengers was both risky and ambitious, but it paid off and now Joss Whedon is overseeing the entire Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe to keep the growing universe organized and within the same continuity. Twentieth Century Fox plans to do the same with the?X-Men and?Fantastic Four franchises and they?ve hired Mark Millar to be their very own Joss Whedon-esque mastermind.

When doing the press rounds for his YouTube series?H+, Bryan Singer couldn?t avoid questions about his next X-Men project, a followup to last year?s?X-Men: First Class directed by Matthew Vaughn. He wasn?t shy about confirming that the film will be based on?X-Men: Days of Future Past, a time travel story from Marvel Comics, and he explained that it will attempt to bridge together all of the films so far, to make sense of the continuity and do something larger and grander with the universe just like Marvel Studios has done with the characters they own film licenses to.

?I think there?s a strong desire to broaden out the universe. I mean, the X-Men universe is every bit on its own as big as the Marvel universe and I think it?s time to reach out and explore it and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films,as Marvel?s done so well. You may see some of that, I don?t know (laughs).?

X-Men - Fantastic Four Crossover Movie

We absolutely will see some of this and the man behind The Ultimates and Marvel?s successful Civil War crossover event will help guide the future X-Men movies along with Josh Trank?s?Fantastic Four reboot. As the official press release reads, Mark Millar has been hired as ?creative consultant on the studio?s upcoming projects based on Marvel Comics properties.? The Marvel Comics properties of course, do not include Daredevil which the studio is dropping after passing on Joe Carnahan?s reboot pitch due to time restrictions.

Millar?s official statement on the new gig (full press release here on page 2):

?As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic-books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it?s a unique combination of both. I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema?s biggest talents. James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn?s one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone-call I?ve ever had.?

Millar not only has experience crafting major story arcs and superhero team-ups in the books but it was his?Kick-Ass books that brought him close to Matthew Vaughn, who of course, is now intimately involved with the?X-Men franchise. With Singer, Vaughn, Millar, Mangold and Trank all potentially working together, Fox has assembled a creative team with strong potential.

Wolverine and Thing in Fantastic Four X-Men Crossover

Coincidentally, Joe Carnahan is working on adapting Mark Millar?s Nemesis?(also a Fox movie) and it all comes full circle.?What?s really odd about this, is that writer Zak Penn (who wrote the first draft of?The Avengers) also wanted to include cameos from the Fantastic Four back when he was writing the X-Men films but Fox wouldn?t let that happen at the time. Now, that?s exactly what they?re doing. Poor guy had his entire script rewritten by Joss Whedon too. Give this guy some credit!

There?s no release date set for?Fantastic Four but it?s safe to assume there will now be some crossover between those characters and the?X-Men, at least in reference. There are now officially two Marvel cinematic universes. Your move, Warner Bros./DC Entertainment.

The Wolverine?hits theaters July 26, 2013.?X-Men: Days of Future Past?hits theaters on July 18th, 2014.

How higher education may be easing the global recession

The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development recently released its Education at a Glance 2012 report, which examines education in OECD and G20 countries (where the data was available). Here are the five most educated countries in the world.

The key to understanding this year?s report is the 2009 - 2010 global recession: ?No group or country ? no matter how well-educated ? is totally immune from the effects of a worldwide economic downturn,? begins the Education at a Glance 2012 report, which notes that young people have borne the largest burden. Nearly 16 percent of people between the ages of 15 and 29 in OECD countries in 2010 were neither employed nor in some kind of education or training program.

The OECD research highlights the importance of higher education, which includes vocational schooling, during an economic downturn. People with more education were found to be able to keep or change jobs more easily; unemployment rates for those with higher education remained low during the economic crisis; and the earning gap between people with higher vs. lower levels of education grew wider during the recession.

The 5 most educated countries in the world

Access to higher education is not equitable for all students, however, and creating opportunities for everyone is a challenge that all countries face, notes the report. For example, young people with at least one parent who has completed a higher education degree in OECD countries have nearly double the chances of attaining higher education opportunities, the report notes.

Another barrier is that students and families have taken on an increasingly large portion of education costs in OECD countries, which the report notes can lead to situations where individuals are burdened with debt that could prevent them from pursuing further education. ?These barriers may impede countries? own goals of increasing educational attainment in their populations,? the report notes.

The 5 most educated countries in the world

COUNTRIES INCLUDED IN THE STUDY:

OECD countries:Australia; Austria; Belgium; Canada; Chile; Czech Republic; Denmark; Estonia; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Iceland; Ireland; Israel; Italy; Japan; Korea; Luxembourg; Mexico; Netherlands; New Zealand; Norway; Poland; Portugal; Slovak Republic; Slovenia; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkey; United Kingdom; United States

Non-OECD G20 major economies:Argentina; Brazil; China; India; Indonesia; Russian Federation; Saudi Arabia; South Africa

U.S. general charged with adultery, other sex crimes

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) ? An Army brigadier general who served five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan has been charged with forcible sodomy, multiple counts of adultery and having inappropriate relationships with several female subordinates, two U.S. defense officials said Wednesday.

The defense officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to provide details on the case.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair faces possible courts martial on charges that include forced sex, wrongful sexual conduct, violating an order, possessing pornography and alcohol while deployed, and misusing a government travel charge card and filing fraudulent claims.

Sinclair, who served as deputy commander in charge of logistics and support for the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan, was sent home in May because of the allegations, the officials said. Since he returned to the U.S., Sinclair has been assigned as a special assistant to the commanding general of 18th Airborne Corps. Often when general officers are under investigation they are temporarily assigned as special assistants to more senior officers or commanders.

The charges were announced at a brief press conference Wednesday at Fort Bragg, the sprawling U.S. Army base in North Carolina that is home to the 82nd Airborne. After reading a prepared statement, base spokesman Col. Kevin Arata refused to take any questions. Reporters were told all questions would have to be made in writing and that no response was likely to come until the following day.

Sinclair was informed of the charges on Monday but has not been placed under arrest. The next step will be an Article 32 investigation, including a preliminary hearing to determine if the matter should go to trial. No date has been set for the hearing, which Arata said would be open to the public.

It was not clear if Sinclair had an attorney, and a phone listing found for him was disconnected.

Sinclair had arrived in Afghanistan for his deployment in September 2011, but had been serving as the division's deputy commander since July 2010.

Sinclair, a trained paratrooper who has been in the Army for 27 years, was serving his third deployment to Afghanistan. He had also served two tours in Iraq, as well as a tour in the first Gulf war.

It's rare for an Army general to face court martial. There have been only two cases in recent years.

Earlier this year, Army Brig. Gen. Roger Duff pleaded guilty to charges of conduct unbecoming an officer, wearing unauthorized awards or ribbons and making a false official statement. He was sentenced to two months confinement and dismissal from the military. Under a pre-trial agreement, only the dismissal may be imposed. The case is still pending, said Army spokesman George Wright.

Prior to that, Maj. Gen. David Hale pleaded guilty to seven counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and one count of making a false statement, also in connection with adultery. He was fined $10,000 and was ordered to retire at the reduced rank of brigadier general, Wright said.

Study pinpoints epigenetic function of common cancer-causing protein: It's not what science thought

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is diagnosed in about 700,000 people in the United States every year. Commonly contributing to SCC is a protein called DNp63a -- it goes abnormally high and the ability of a patient's body to kill cancer cells goes abnormally low. In many cases of SCC, it's just that simple. And science thought the function of DNp63a was simple, as well: the tumor suppressor gene p53 is responsible for recognizing and killing cancer cells, and in SCC, it's usually inactivated. It looked like high DNp63a repressed p53, made SCC.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published September 26 in the journal Genes & Development throws the accepted role of DNp63a on its ear. Though high DNp63a and low p53 activity are correlated in SCC, there's no causation -- DNp63a doesn't affect p53. Instead, DNp63a employs "epigenetics" to keep cancer cells alive.

"This is a potent oncogene whose mechanism we thought we knew. But basically in this paper we demolish the accepted model. DNp63a doesn't work through p53 -- it operates through epigenetic silencing of anti-proliferative genes," says the study's senior author, Joaquin M. Espinosa, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at CU Boulder.

Genes are blueprints that code for proteins and these proteins in turn drive most things that happen in the body, both good and bad. But between genes and their protein products is the layer of epigenetics -- genes may be expressed differently depending on the heritable, epigenetic features that turn them on and off. In the case of DNp63a, it employs a protein partner called H2A.Z, which in volume effectively buries anti-proliferative genes in silt, rendering them unable to go about their anti-cancer duties.

"Independently of p53, DNp63a is shutting down genes that stop cell division -- shutting down anti-proliferative genes so that cells can keep dividing and dividing and dividing," Espinosa says.

Now that the function of DNp63a is known, Espinosa is looking inside the chain of events for a breakable link.

"DNp63a itself isn't druggable," he says, "but the enzymes that partner with DNp63a for epigenetic silencing are."

With a mechanism in hand, Espinosa and colleagues can now explore in animal models the possible effects of breaking the DNp63a mechanism. Drug away an essential enzyme and DNp63a may lose its ability to cause cancer.

'Mrs. Justin Bieber' Loses Battle With Brain Cancer ? 101.5 jamz ...

BOSTON (CBS) ? A 6-year-old Merrimac girl battling brain cancer who captured the hearts of many and became known as Justin Bieber?s wife has passed away.

Avalanna Routh made headlines back in February after meeting her ?husband.?

Bieber reacted to the news on Twitter.

?RIP Avalanna. i love you,? he also wrote.

Bieber heard the story of how doctors and nurses at Dana-Farber set up a wedding for Avalanna at a Jimmy Fund event. There were flowers, a guitarist, and even a life-sized Bieber poster at the ceremony.

Bieber then flew Avalanna and her family to New York to arrange their Valentine?s Day date.

After the date, Bieber tweeted about meeting Avalanna saying:

?that was one of the best things i have ever done. she was AWESOME! Feeling really inspired now! #MrsBieber?

Avalanna was battling AT/RT, an atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor. It is a very rare form of brain cancer. Because less than 30 new cases of AT/RT are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, it is very difficult to acquire grant money for research.

Her family announced her passing on their Twitter page Wednesday morning:

?Our darling Avalanna went to Heaven this morning. Oh Avalanna, the brightest star ? you took our hearts with you, our greatest Love;( ?

Dana-Farber released this statement afterwards.

?We are saddened by the passing of Avalanna Routh. She was a very courageous young person who lived her life with grace and determination. By generously sharing her story, she raised awareness worldwide about atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumors and articulated the need for greater research of this rare cancer. Our thoughts are with her family.?

Insight: Italy's slow Internet set for reboot

MILAN/PARIS (Reuters) - IMM Hydraulics, a small exporter of hoses for industries such as agriculture and mining, is the kind of firm that should be at the center of Italy's efforts to rekindle its stagnant economy.

Instead, the company, located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, is wrestling with a basic impediment to profitability: a woefully slow broadband connection. With just 2 megabits (MB) per second, IMM Hydraulics' broadband connection lags behind the 5 MB typical in Italian cities, which in turn is well behind an average of 12 MB in France and 16 MB in Germany.

"It takes us days to process an order whereas it could take half an hour," said finance director Marcello Di Campli. "Broadband is one of our biggest problems, probably just after our access to credit."

Europe's fourth-largest economy has long been an Internet laggard, its creaky networks stunting the development of online commerce and banking. Italians pay among the highest prices in Europe for broadband speeds on a par with Estonia or Cyprus. As a result, only half the population uses the Internet at least once a week and Italian firms generate 5.4 percent of sales on-line compared to 13.9 percent elsewhere in Europe.

Now the reformist government of Prime Minister Mario Monti has identified better broadband as a national priority to spur growth and reduce Italy's 11 percent unemployment and bulging deficits.

"The statistics on e-commerce are chilling ... The broadband gap constrains growth by reducing the competitiveness of export-oriented companies," said Paolo Gentiloni, former communications minister and member of a group of deputies that has made proposals to support online commerce and government services.

In the government's sights is one-time monopoly Telecom Italia, which it believes has long thwarted competition and put off investing in its domestic network because of its huge debts.

Monti's government has enlisted state-backed finance body Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) to work out a plan with Telecom Italia and its rivals to create a nationwide super-fast fiber optic broadband network.

One of the most radical options under discussion is for Telecom Italia to spin off its existing network of decades-old copper lines - worth between 9 and 15 billion euros - into a separate company that would run Italy's fixed telephone and broadband system and sell capacity to other Internet providers on a wholesale basis. The new "access network company" could be partly state-owned and would have more incentive to invest in broadband, say advocates, because it would have neither debt to pay nor market share to defend.

Such a move would amount to something of a revolution in Europe and would test whether the state can be more effective than the private sector in building national broadband infrastructure.

Australia's government provided the blue-print in 2009 when, frustrated with the slow pace of investment, it became the first country to create a national company charged with building a single open access fiber broadband network to 90 percent of homes by 2021. Britain adopted a slightly different approach, requiring BT Group to create a separate subsidiary to sells wholesale access to competitors and build fiber broadband across the country.

TO SPLIT OR NOT TO SPLIT

Telecom Italia, like other former telecom monopolies in Europe, owns the last meters of copper lines to homes and businesses, which it then rents out to competitors - mobile operators Vodafone, Wind, and Hutchison's 3 - for a monthly fee set by regulators.

In Italy and elsewhere, it is these decades-old copper lines that need to be replaced by fiber optic wires to boost broadband speeds to up to 100 megabits per second. Updating those wires will cost 200 billion euros, says the European Commission, a sum telecom operators will struggle to mobilize.

Italy can't just issue orders to Telecom Italia because the company is no longer owned by the state but by individual shareholders and a consortium of three Italian banks and Telefonica. So government officials are using other ways to persuade it.

After months of fruitless negotiations between Telecom Italia chairman Franco Bernabe and CDP head Franco Bassanini, the state pledged to invest up to 500 million euro in Metroweb, a competing fiber broadband project in Italy's north, to up the pressure, a source close to the Metroweb group said.

Bassanini told Reuters that the CDP was "absolutely open to finding an agreement" and that talks with Telecom Italia were ongoing on "a broader hypothesis" than just the Metroweb investment. He acknowledged that the creation of a combined network company that merged all the current Italian network assets would be "highly sensitive" for Telecom Italia.

According to a person close to Telecom Italia, the CDP has hired Deutsche Bank to analyze the value of its network in preparation for hiving it off.

The pressure is taking effect: Telecom Italia is debating the spin-off idea internally and Bernabe has promised a decision by the end of this year.

Telecom Italia has also agreed to share some infrastructure with rival broadband provider Fastweb and to co-ordinate the rollouts of their respective fiber networks in a bid to cut costs - a deal that could make negotiations over a broader nationwide project easier, analysts say.

But Telecom Italia executives are divided over whether spinning off its fixed network is wise, said two people close to the company. Chief Executive Marco Patuano is backing the move because he believes the infrastructure's value will decline with the advent of super-fast mobile technology known as LTE, as well as competing fiber projects in Italy.

By contrast Bernabe believes owning the last meters of copper into people's homes represents a competitive advantage since rivals must pay to access it to be able to offer broadband to their customers. He has repeatedly said Telecom Italia will not do anything to lose control over its network.

UPGRADE STRATEGIES

Governments around the world are trying different strategies to upgrade their systems.

The United States is relying solely on competition in the private sector while Japan and Korea have ploughed public money into building nationwide fiber-optic networks, a task made easier by dense urban geography. Sweden and Norway became European leaders in fibre-optic broadband penetration via a mixture of tax breaks, subsidies for rural deployments, and in Sweden's case, requiring state-owned municipal utilities to create local networks.

Although it is early to judge Australia's nationwide fibre project, Britain's effective separation of BT in 2005 has taken the country from the middle of Europe's rankings on broadband speeds, cost and usage to near the top.

In the European Union, telecom operators and policymakers have spent the past year fighting. Operators argue they shouldn't have to share the new networks with rivals if they are to bear the cost of building them alone. The wrangling has contributed to upgrade delays in Italy and elsewhere.

Brussels now says member states will not be required to make the operators share fibre networks and has given operators free rein to choose what technology to deploy, in a regulatory framework that will operate to at least 2020.

Crucially, regulators will no longer set the prices at which incumbents sell wholesale access to smaller competitors on new fibre networks, so long as incumbents offer "equivalent" prices to everyone.

Gabrielle Gauthey, a former telecoms regulator in France who now works at Alcatel-Lucent, argues governments have a role to play in enabling adequate broadband coverage.

"Many telcos just don't have the money to invest the sums that are needed," said Gauthey. "It's a massive effort not unlike electrifying a whole country."

A network spin-off could help Telecom Italia reach its debt reduction targets and cut its 30.4 billion euro debt pile - and the operator seems to be seriously considering the idea. In a recent presentation to investors at a Sanford Bernstein conference, Telecom Italia said the rewards of a separating out its fixed network now outweighed the risks.

A banker close to Telecom Italia put the probability of the group going through with the spin-off at 70 percent, and two other banking sources say the company is considering appointing two banks to advise it on the mechanics.

A decision can't come soon enough for businessmen like Siro Badon, who owns a business in a shoe manufacturing district near Venice where local companies export 92 percent of the 20 million pairs of shoes made every year.

"Some companies in our district work with brands like Louis Vuitton and Armani with stylists in Paris and all over the world. Imagine the huge damage it causes not being able to communicate swiftly," Badon said.

"Sometimes I feel we are carrying an old country on our shoulders. I wait and hope."

Not All Immigrants Support Illegal Immigration

Contrary to what the?Liberal-Leftist media would like you to believe, many legal immigrants deplore President Obama?s de facto?amnesty?policy toward?illegal?immigrants.

My parents and relatives came to the United States legally and became U.S. citizens ? learning the language, culture, values, etc. ?Most disapprove of those who come here illegally and feel they should be returned to their home country and apply for legal citizenship, if that?s what they want.

Of course, many do not want U.S. Citizenship.? They simply want to earn a superior living (by their home country standards)? and send their earnings to their families in foreign lands.? And as poor as they might be depicted by our Liberal-Leftist media and the Democrat Socialists and quasi-Communists, their lifestyle here in America is far superior to that in their home country.?

As noble as that may seem, many illegal foreign workers are taking jobs away from American citizens ? from legal immigrants, young workers, and many of our 23 million unemployed citizens.

This isn?t to suggest immigration is a bad thing. Were it not for legal immigration, I wouldn?t be here. Furthermore, with America?s declining birthrate, immigration is an essential demographic necessity, if we are to support our growing entitlement society.

However, immigration must be legal ? and must be governed by appropriate laws that address our nations needs, wants, expectations and culture.

On this latter point, yes!, immigration policy should maintain the traditional culture and values of our country.? What kind of a nation do we want to maintain? ?This point seems to be ignored by Obama, the Democrats and the Liberal-Leftist media who want to ?Fundamentally Transform America.?

Business Evolves, Does Your Sales Process?

Sure, there are some tried and true ways to handle sales and customer service that don?t really ever go out of style. However, if a salesperson also continually evolves and improves, they?re likely to stay ahead of the industry curve.

Here are some areas you may want to look at to upgrade your sales process:

Your ?Rolodex?

Are you using a paper system to track client names and numbers?

This may have worked in the past, and it never hurts to have an index of business cards, but you know you can?t always take your paper list of contacts with you. Consider upgrading to a digital CRM format that lets you access information from anywhere.

Not only might a cloud-based contact database provide easy anywhere access to contacts, but it also allows you to add information on the fly that can help you manage your accounts better. You can also share these contact details with management and colleagues for collaboration purposes.

Your Day Planner

The old paper calendar might have worked well for decades in the world of sales but nowadays there are way better ways to manage your time. A digital calendar will help you set alerts so that nothing gets forgotten, it?ll help you book meetings with clients and colleagues, it?ll help you collaborate internally within your company, and more.

Loss of your paper calendar could be catastrophic but the new electronic versions can be backed up so that they can be accessed and updated from anywhere.

Your Sales Spreadsheet

If you?re using a sales spreadsheet to track what?s happening in your sales funnel , this is another outdated approach. What if you lose it? And is it displayed in an actionable way that helps you prioritize your workload and see, really easily, what your numbers are against your actual plan? A CRM tool is a much better approach that can help you not only track information but easily action what is most pressing. Consider reading this article Stop using Excel templates for tracking your sales pipeline? for more info on how a more automated solution could help you.

For example, if you implement a digital sales forecasting and pipeline tool and track your results you can see how effective your processes are at each phase of the sales process.

Using Business Intelligence Tools

Old sales tools didn?t exactly make it easy in terms of account management and business development with accounts.? It wasn?t easy to track old results against plans. Today?s BI tools can help you generate helpful business reports that make it clear to you how you?re really doing and how you might be able to boost results with customers.

There are many other ways to ensure your sales process is continually evolving. It is important to continually update your sales script.? Some companies use the very same? script for each customer instead of tailoring sales and marketing plans depending on the audience.

Reviewing your efforts regularly in terms of how you?re managing existing accounts and how you go after new business can help you make sure that you are going to continue to excel in the world of sales.

Cancer deaths 'to fall 17% by 2030' - Crewe Chronicle

Cancer death rates in the UK are set to fall by almost 17% by 2030, experts predict.

Better diagnosis and treatment is the main reason for the change, according to the charity Cancer Research UK, but the improved outlook is also said to reflect the fact that fewer people are smoking.

In 2010 an estimated 170 people in every 100,000 members of the general population died from cancer. Over the next 17 years this is forecast to fall to 142 per 100,000.

Ovarian cancer is expected to see the biggest drop in numbers of patients dying, at 42.6%. Incidence of the disease is expected to reduce from 9.1 women per 100,000 to 5.3 per 100,000 by 2030.

Death rates for breast cancer are predicted to fall by 28%, for bowel cancer by 23% and prostate cancer by 16%.

A few cancers show a reverse trend, with larger numbers of people dying. Death rates for oral cancer are likely to rise by 22%, as incidence rises from 2.9 to 3.5 per 100,000 people. For liver cancer, death rates are predicted to go up by 39%, with incidence increasing from 4.2 to 5.9 per 100,000.

Professor Peter Sasieni, Cancer Research UK epidemiologist at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "Our latest estimations show that for many cancers, adjusting for age, death rates are set to fall dramatically in the coming decades. And what's really encouraging is that the biggest cancer killers, lung, breast, bowel, and prostate, are part of this falling trend.

"Because old age is the biggest risk factor for cancer and more people are living longer, they have a greater chance of developing and, unfortunately, dying from the disease. But overall the proportion, or rate, of those who die from cancer is falling."

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "We continue to rely on the public's generosity to drive progress. This helps us turn discoveries made in our science labs into new treatments and to carry out clinical trials to find the best ways to treat patients."

The figures were released in the run-up to Stand Up To Cancer, a fundraising partnership between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. The campaign will end with a live TV entertainment show on Friday October 19.

Immune system molecule affects our weight

Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have identified a molecule in the immune system that could affect hunger and satiety. The researchers hope that new treatments for obesity will benefit from this finding.

Interleukin-6 is a chemical messenger in our immune system that plays an important role in fighting off infection. However, recent research has, surprisingly, shown that it can also trigger weight loss. Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, have been investigating and managed to identify the specific types of brain cells that are targeted by the interleukin-6 molecule.

The results show that the cells that are affected by interleukin-6 produce substances that not only affect our sense of hunger and fullness but also control the body's ability to burn fat. "Interleukin-6 increases levels of substances in the brain that trigger weight loss, which could explain why high levels of this molecule lead to weight loss," says doctoral student Erik Schle, who is presenting the results in his thesis.

It is known that our normally low levels of interleukin-6 in the brain increase dramatically during an infection, typically accompanied by reduced hunger and fatigue.

"Our previous findings would indicate that interleukin-6 can play a key role in regulating the metabolism of healthy individuals too," says Erik Schle.

"This is clearly substantiated by our finding that mice which lack interleukin-6 get fat, and that the metabolism of rats injected with interleukin-6 directly into the brain increases."

Although it is not yet fully understood how interleukin-6 in the brain affects bodyweight, the researchers have concluded that anyone whose brain produces plenty of interleukin-6 could be protected against overweight. The thesis also shows that our gut bacteria indirectly affect the substances in the brain that regulate bodyweight.

"This is both surprising and new. It could in the long run lead to people fighting obesity by changing what they eat in line with how it affects the brain," says Erik Schle.

vietnam-businesses-remain-highly-optimistic-says-global-report-543149-small-21220

The Hanoitimes ? Two-thirds of businesses in Vietnam have adopted a stronger focus towards the domestic market since the global financial crisis broke out, a new report says.

The latest Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR), which surveyed over 11,500 businesses in 40 economies around the world, including 200 Vietnamese businesses, focuses o?n the experience of businesses and their expectations for the next 12 months.

The report found domestic businesses are optimistic about the economy over the next 12 months, although less so than in 2010.

Business expectations for revenue remain high, at 91 percent while the Asia-Pacific business average is much lower at 53 percent.

Ninety percent of local businesses expect to increase profits in 2012, well above the Asia Pacific average of 37 percent.

The cost of finance, around 59 percent, was cited as the most pressing constraint o?n expansion by Vietnamese businesses this year, significantly higher than the Asia-Pacific business average of 31 percent.

A shortage of orders/reduced demand is also a significant worry for 50 percent of local businesses.

Around 19 percent of Vietnamese businesses believe that lenders are unsupportive of their business, far higher than the average across the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, o?nly 4 percent, the report found.

It predicted that in 2013-2016, a more helpful global environment can see the country hit an average growth rate of 7.3 percent per year, assuming the government and central bank can get a handle o?n inflation.

Remittances from Vietnamese overseas are expected to remain robust in the medium term, boosting private consumption, the report said.

Thome, Orioles win 16th straight in extra innings

(AP) ? When a game goes into extra innings, the Baltimore Orioles have been almost unbeatable. When Jim Thome comes up in a big situation, his teammates are confident he'll deliver.

Thome did that Saturday, doubling in the go-ahead run in a 9-6 win in 12 innings over the Boston Red Sox that was Baltimore's 16th straight victory in games that reach overtime.

The 22-year veteran came through in his first game after nearly two months on the disabled list, enabling the Orioles to remain one game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East. They lead the Oakland Athletics by two games for the league's No. 1 wild-card berth.

"This situation is not new to him," said Adam Jones, who doubled and scored on Thome's hit. "He's missed some time, but stepping into that box ... he always rises to the occasion."

Just as the Orioles rise to the challenge of extra-inning games. Their winning streak in those games is the best in the majors since the Cleveland Indians won 17 straight in 1949. The Orioles are 16-2 in extras this year, losing only to the Yankees on April 10-11.

"We've had so much experience at it there's not some sense of panic," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said.

The Orioles won their sixth in a row overall.

Thome had two homers, six RBIs and 10 walks in 18 games after being acquired from Philadelphia on July 1 before going on the disabled list from July 31 until Friday with a herniated disc in his neck.

"These guys have been playing very well and to come in and get a big hit like that is big," he said. "You want to be a part of what they're doing and I think that's what makes you work hard when you're down (in the minors) because you really don't know when you're on rehab how the process is going to go. So being here and being in this atmosphere, you enjoy every minute of it."

Thome was having a rough day in his first appearance since July 27, and was 0 for 5 with a double play and two strikeouts. But the slugger gave Baltimore a 7-6 lead with his ground-rule double off Alfredo Aceves (2-10). Endy Chavez and Manny Machado added RBI singles to pad the lead.

"The game is a weird game. That's what makes it so fun," Thome said. "You can be 0 for 5 and continue to be positive and keep battling and you get a big hit like that."

Tommy Hunter (6-8) pitched a perfect 11th and Jim Johnson finished to extend his franchise record to 47 saves. He's blown just three.

Jones earlier hit his 31st home run.

The Red Sox are 0-7 in extra-inning games at home.

"At the end of the season, the teams that you see go into the playoffs pull out the extra-inning games," Boston's Cody Ross said. "We just haven't been able to do that this year."

Their lineup Saturday had seven players, including starter Aaron Cook, who spent time in the minors this year.

"When you don't have the firepower for the big hit," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said, "the guys came up short."

Trailing 6-3, the Red Sox tied the game with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.

In the seventh, they loaded the bases with no outs against Jake Arrieta on a double by Scott Podsednik, a walk to Pedro Ciriaco and an infield single by Dustin Pedroia. Ross and Ryan Lavarnway each drove in a run when they grounded into forceouts.

Pedro Strop relieved to start the bottom of the eighth and retired the first two batters. But Daniel Nava and Podsednik followed with consecutive doubles, tying it at 6.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first when Nate McLouth led off with a walk, stole second, moved up on a groundout and scored on a grounder by Jones. The Red Sox tied it in the bottom half on a ground-rule double by Pedroia and a single by Lavarnway.

Baltimore made it 2-1 in the second on an RBI single by Machado then added a run in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Mark Reynolds, his 22nd of the year.

Boston tied it in the bottom half of the fourth on a leadoff single by Mike Aviles and Danny Valencia's first homer since the Red Sox acquired him from the Minnesota Twins on Aug. 5. It was his third of the season.

The Orioles went back on top 5-3 in the sixth on a two-run triple by Ryan Flaherty, starting for second baseman Robert Andino, who was in uniform but didn't play after being hit on the left ear flap of his helmet by a pitch in the ninth inning of Baltimore's 4-2 win on Friday night. Results of a CAT scan were negative and Showalter said that, pending results of other tests, he might play Sunday.

Jones made it 6-3 in the seventh with his homer.

"I'm tired of playing extra-inning games, to be honest with you," Jones said, "but, hey, we're not quitting 'til that last out is made, and if we need 13, 14 15, up to 18 innings to do the job, then I guess that's just what we have to do."

NOTES: Three of the Orioles last four games have gone extra innings, wins at Seattle of 4-2 in 18 innings and 3-1 in 11 before opening the series in Boston. .... The three Red Sox in the lineup who haven't been in the minors this year were Aviles, Pedroia and Ross. ... Cook had won his previous start after going 0-5 in six before that. ... Cook had allowed just one stolen base, the fewest among AL pitchers with at least 80 innings, before McLouth stole second in the first. ... Chris Tillman (8-2) pitches for Baltimore against Felix Doubront (11-9) in Sunday's finale of the three-game series.

SpaceX's 'Grasshopper' vertical takoff vertical landing rocket takes its first small hop video

This test-firing may not match the flame of earlier demonstrations, but SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted out a brief eight-second video of another setup it's testing, the "Grasshopper" reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing rocket. While the first hop would've been shamed in any interstellar dunk contest, future tests will range in height from a few hundred feet to two miles. The goal is to eventually create a reusable first stage for its Falcon 9 rocket, able to land safely instead of crashing into the sea and damaged beyond repair. Hit the more coverage links for a few more details on the project as well as pictures of it at the Texas test site, or check after the break to see the video.

Suspected Colo. movie theater gunman?s new look

James Holmes in jail photos from July and September (Arapahoe Co. Sheriff's Office)

All eyes in the packed courtroom were trained on the door just to the left of the jury box. The feeling was tense as we waited to get our first look at the man suspected of committing one of the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

Perched on my tiptoes, I quickly scribbled in my reporters notebook as James Holmes was escorted into the room.

    "Armed deputies in royal blue."

"Looked down ... shackled in front."

    "Maroon jumpsuit, curly red hair."

Three days earlier, 12 people were killed and 58 others wounded when police say Holmes went on a shooting rampage during a sold-out showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." Some reported that Holmes told arresting officers he was the Joker, the infamous villain from the Batman movies.

In court, it appeared he was trying to look the part. His wavy hair was dyed a cartoonish orange-red. He appeared dazed. His eyes opened and closed often. His head bobbed.

Now, eight weeks later, a strikingly different Holmes arrived in court. Gone were the dyed hair and mutton chop sideburns.

Reporters at Thursday's hearing said the 24-year-old former neuroscience student looked around the room at lawyers and journalists, smiled, and seemed to follow the courtroom conversation. The Associated Press also wrote that he appeared to be moving his mouth but not actually talking.

At least one family member receiving updates about Holmes from the courtroom told the AP that the alleged gunman's demeanor was an act to appear mentally ill.

"He's just putting on a show," said Greg Medek of Aurora, whose daughter Micayla, 23, died in the shooting. "I don't think he's crazy. He's just evil."
