Film Review: The Intouchables | Sassi Sam Girlie Gossip Files

Directed by: Olivier Nakache, Eric Toledano
Starring: Fran?ois Cluzet, Omar Sy, Anne Le Ny
Sassi?s Star Rating: 4/5

A warm tale based on the true relationship between a paraplegic and his caregiver. This French film, directed and written by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, has swept the globe, leaving pleased critics in its wake.

Phillipe (Fran?ois Cluzet) is a rich, intelligent man bound to a wheelchair. Driss (Omar Sy) is from a poor neighborhood and his troubled past includes time in prison. The two couldn?t be more different, but it is this difference that convinces Phillipe to hire Driss. Phillipe is tired of being pitied, and finds Driss?s direct manner refreshing.

The unlikely pair form a close bond, taking each other out of their comfort zones, from attending the opera to para-sailing, and become even closer because of it. The relationship between the two actors is so natural, and you will fall in love with Omar Sy?s infectious smile, not to mention his dance moves.

For a tender tale based on a true story see, The Intouchables, in cinemas now!

Love
Allison

Apple 1 To Sell For Over $90,000 - Business Insider

One of the first computers Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs built together is heading to auction, priced at about $90,000. This is the famed Apple 1.

Not only was it built by Woz's own hands in in 1976, but it was the company's first production computer. Jobs and Woz built and sold about 200 units.

They financed their creation by selling their most prized possessions, as?the story goes:?Jobs sold his VW van and Woz sold his HP-65 calculator to raise the money.

$90,000 is a relative bargain for a working Apple 1. The auctioneer really expects it to sell for between $155,000 and $250,000. Earlier this year, in New York, an Apple 1 sold for $374,500.

Then again, an Apple 1 listed at auction earlier this month didn't sell at all, reports computer historian David Greelish on The Classic Computing Blog. The seller wanted at least $80,000, and the high bid came in around $51,000, Greelish says.

That model was broken. This Apple 1 still works, as the video below shows. Some of the parts are signed by Steve Wozniak, too.?

If you want it, you'll have until 1:00 a.m. Pacific on Nov. 24 to submit the winning bid.

Here's the Apple 1 in action:

The doggone truth: Spending on pets is soaring - Life Inc.

Mike Segar / Reuters

In these times of economic uncertainty, people are spending more than ever on the care and feeding of man's best, furry friend.

By Katy Barnato, cnbc.com

The U.S. pet industry is set to rake in a record $53 billion this year, despite sluggish overall consumer demand, according to a report by brokerage firm ConvergEx.

CNBC.com: Cutting-edge products for your pets

?Even in a faltering economy, pet industry expenditures continue to accelerate,? strategists Nicholas Colas, Beth Reed and Sarah Millar wrote.

?While people are putting off some other major ?lifestyle? changes, such as getting married and purchasing a home, they?re showing no signs of giving up man?s best friend.?

CNBC.com: For the dog that has everything: concierge services

Spending on pets stood at $37.3 billion in 2001 and has grown steadily since. This year, sales of pet products and services are expected to total $52.9 billion, a 42 increase over 2001.

According to the report, the total lifetime cost of owning a small to medium-sized dog ranges from $7,240 to $12,700, and the lifetime cost of a cat ranges from $8,620 to $11,275.

CNBC.com: Popular kids in high school tend to make more money, study says

The report points out that since 2008, in particular, the cost of keeping a pet has surged above the rate of inflation.

?While the price of pets themselves, as well as supplies and accessories are getting comparatively cheaper, the prices of vet and other pet services, and pet food, are all rising at a pace greater than the rate of inflation,? the strategists said.

CNBC.com: Survey says: merry shoppers, shallow pockets

The cost of pet ownership has risen by 11.7 percent since mid-2008, the strategists said, versus just 5.2 percent for the consumer price index.

Planned Parenthood Releases New Video to Educate Women ...

Nation?s Leading Women?s Health Care Provider and Advocate Encourages Women to Take Control of Their Health During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Tuesday Twitter Town Hall on #BetterBreastHealth

New York, N.Y.--(ENEWSPF)--October 8, 2012. ? Planned Parenthood, the nation?s leading women?s health care provider and advocate, is encouraging women under 40 to take control of their breast health ? and has released a new video today to help educate young women on what to do if they notice a change in their breasts.

?Too often women under 40 dismiss a lump as something that does not need attention, or the fear of what an abnormality could be becomes paralyzing,? said Dr. Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services, Planned Parenthood Federation of America. ?Our goal is to break down those myths and fears, and provide women with more information so that they can be their own best breast expert.? This video helps do that.?

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 9 at 1 p.m.?EST, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Dr. Nucatola and Dr. Mark Pearlman, a preeminent breast cancer expert and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan, will be leading a Twitter Town Hall on breast health as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The online conversation will allow individuals to ask questions by using the hash tag #betterbreasthealth or mentioning @PPFAQ.

In addition, Planned Parenthood released a video last week featuring Gabrielle Union, star of the new BET drama Being Mary Jane and Planned Parenthood breast health advocate, discussing the need for women to move beyond their fear when they find an abnormality in their breast.

?Fear is what prevented my dear friend Kristen from getting a breast abnormality checked out ? and that fear cost Kristen her life,? said Union.? ?National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to take action and educate ourselves and our friends, so that if something doesn?t feel right, you talk to a doctor or nurse as soon as possible.?

Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses play a unique role in delivering health care to young women, as 94 percent of Planned Parenthood patients are under the age of 40 ? and help young women understand the screening that?s best for them as well as the factors that can reduce their breast cancer risk ? including getting regular exercise and limiting alcohol intake.

Clinical breast exams are the first line of defense for providers in detecting breast cancer in most young women.? Each year, Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses provide nearly 750,000 breast exams.? Like most ob/gyns and primary care physicians, if a Planned Parenthood health care provider finds an abnormality during an exam, the patient is referred to a breast specialist for further examination, which may include diagnostic tests, like an ultrasound or biopsy.? Planned Parenthood?s newly established diagnostic grant program helps to cover the costs of these tests for patients when possible, as the tests can be costly, especially for uninsured and low-income women.

One in five women in America has turned to Planned Parenthood at some point in her life for health care. To date, 47 Planned Parenthood affiliates have applied for and received funding to expand their breast health services to cover the costs of diagnostic follow up care.? DAILY DOOM ANTIDOTE - HillBuzz

[ Is the plan to allow the Tokyo Roses in conservative ranks (like Erik Erikson at RedState.com) to bloom again after the next presidential debate on October 16th and declare "Romney fumbled!" or "Obama's back in the game!"? ?Let's eliminate the possibility of this happening by declaring it unacceptable right here and now for any conservative writer to help the corrupt media change the narrative to a "Romney blew his lead!" and "Obama's winning again!" storyline. ]

It?s amazing what a different that Denver presidential debate on October 3rd, 2012 has made in conservative ranks because I almost feel that a ?Daily Doom Antidote? is no longer needed because I don?t see any conservative writers ? not even the biggest Tokyo Rose out there, Erik Erikson at RedState.com ? claiming ?Obama is winning!? anymore. ?I?m convinced that Erikson was being paid by CNN to purposefully depress and demoralize Romney voters by ?being a conservative voice that admits Obama is winning and all hope is lost?, but that debate was such a disaster for Democrats that even Erikson was forced to back off or lose all remaining credibility. ?I know that even Erikson isn?t shameless enough to try to claim that Joe Biden will win the debate tomorrow against Paul Ryan (or after the debate try to convince his readers that ?Biden?s performance was a game changer! Obama?s winning again!?) but I am concerned that the plan for the Tokyo Roses is to wait until after the October 16th Town Hall debate between Romney and Obama to start a ?Romney fumbled! Romney has blown his lead! Obama is back and can?t lose now!? meme.

I know this is what the corrupt, vintage media in this country WANTS to do because it serves as Obama?s personal Ministry of Truth (Minitrue, for short) to churn out propaganda like this. ?If Obama manages to stand upright, can focus on keeping his eyes from staring blankly ahead or meandering down to the floor for long lengths of time, and strings two or three sentences together relatively successfully then Minitrue will declare Obama the undisputed winner of the next debate. That?s when the Tokyo Roses will bloom again in the garden of conservative writers like Erikson to insist the Town Hall was ?a game changer!? and the hacks will all have at it, doing what Minitrue wants and expects them to do if they want to continue being the ?go-to conservative? for guest slots on CNN, MSNBC, or wherever.

I just have an incredibly hard time believing any of this will work because the sad truth is that Barack Obama is on way too many narcotics for him to whip into shape a week from now.

It should be clear to anyone watching him that the man has a serious drug problem and needs to be in Betty Ford, not preparing for a debate. ?Valerie Jarrett was supposed to be watching him and was charged with keeping his drug use to manageable levels and making sure it didn?t interfere with his presidency, but clearly she failed. ?This issue caused the friction between first Jarrett and Rahm Emanuel and then ultimately Jarrett and Bill Daley, which is why Obama goes through Chiefs of Staff like Liz Taylor went through husbands (may she rest in peace). Without a TelePrompTer he can read from, Obama is lost and his brain can no longer access the information he needs to deliver verbally.

Remember those commercials in the 80s where someone fried an egg in a skillet and said ?this is your brain on drugs?? while doing it? Educators could easily show high school students footage of Barack Obama at the Denver debate as a cautionary tale to warn them about the consequences of drug use. ?Barack Obama is this generation?s Judy Garland?which is fitting, since he?s always been a friend of Dorothy.

*****************************************************

MUST READ: ?This is pretty ?much a historic event because I am asking you to read something that Andrew Sullivan wrote. ?Yes, THAT Andrew Sullivan?the guy who had a complete nervous breakdown yesterday, so please savor every word of this column. ?He just LOST IT.? Seriously. ?In a nutshell, he ranted and raved at Barack Obama for ?throwing away the election in that Denver debate?. He really turned on Obama in a heartbeat. ?It is a sight to behold.

LOOKIT THIS:? While we are on the subject of Denver, here?s another take on ?why Obama lost? that?s fascinating. ?Essentially, the Left is admitting that all the things conservatives have said about Obama for years are all true and they were put on display in one place at the same time in Denver: ?his arrogance, his poor work ethic, his dependence on nonstop praise from the Ministry of Truth that is the corrupt media in this country, etc. ?What?s fascinating to me is that all of this is stuff I think people should instantly see whenever they look at Obama but for whatever reason the general public didn?t notice until last Wednesday.

AWESOMENESS: ?I really have to hand it to Professor William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection because the man?s relentless pursuit of Elizabeth Warren for all her many bizarre lies might actually lead to the woman being prosecuted for a crime. ?We?ve all mocked ?Fauxcahontas? for lying about being a Native American so she could benefit from Harvard?s affirmative action policies and earn promotions she didn?t otherwise deserve, but Jacobson?s proving that Warren also practiced Massachusetts state law without being a member of the Massachusetts bar or being in any way qualified to represent clients in the Bay State. ?Democrats in the state at first refused to look into any of this, but Jacobson kept up the pressure and now the governing body assigned to investigate improper conduct by attorneys is being forced to get involved. ?Absent Jacobson, this would not have happened.

I highlight this because in olden days this country actually had a media that was interested in stories like this, with journalists who hoped to make names for themselves by rooting out corruption and exposing people like Warren for improper conduct they engaged in repeatedly. ?That was before the media in this country became Minitrue, a de facto arm of the Democrat Party. ?Absent any professional media doing its job, people like Jacobson have stepped up to fill that niche and stories indeed still break?it?s just that citizen-journalists and amateur sleuths are the ones breaking them.

I want to take this as another opportunity to encourage all of you to stop using the pejoratives ?blogger? or ?blog? and delete them from your vocabulary. ?If you call someone like Jacobson a ?blogger?, I want to ask you to never come back to this site again because I don?t want you as a reader. ?I?m dead serious about that too, because I am tired of conservatives helping the Left every day by using the words Democrats WANT you to use to disparage and diminish the people who work hard every day to break the stories that Minitrue deliberately won?t touch. ?The Left goes out of its way to say things like ?blogger William Jacobson? because that diminishes his work and attempts to relegate him to the same realm as people who maintain rarely-updated web pages about their household pets or a vacation they took once many years ago. ?THOSE people ?blog?. ?Jacobson ? and other conservative writers like him ? deserve much more respect than that because the work they are doing is important and vital and is purposefully NOT being done by Minitrue because it hurts Democrats. ?Calling sites like Legal Insurrection ?blogs? is just rude of you?and ignorant, too, because they are much more important than that.

Words matter. ?They?re really like tiny magical spells. ?Words shape public perception and are artfully crafted in sentences by talented wordsmiths to impact elections by either driving memes that benefit one side or the other or by mitigating things that are harmful to protected parties. ?If you watch carefully, you?ll see that the writers and talking heads that comprise Minitrue never, ever use words that put Republicans or conservatives in a good light?and go out of their way to use terms like ?blogger? or ?blog? to lower the credibility and respect afforded to conservative writers whom the Left seeks to diminish. ?Meanwhile, conservatives stupidly call people ?bloggers? and help the Left in its mission because ?this is how I always talk and I?m going to use the words I want and nobody can tell me any different?. ?That?s why Republicans also keep using the word ?liberal? to describe Democrats, even though that?s the word Democrats WANT them to use and it?s how they describe themselves because focus groups have shown that most Americans associate the word with ?openness to new ideas? and ?the desire to work with all sides? when nothing could be further from the truth about the Democrat Party today. These people are Leftists and calling anything other than that (or ?lefties? as a variation on the theme) is foolish. ?Words matter. ?So stop using terms that help the people you DON?T support?and stop using words that HURT good people who are on OUR SIDE.

I know it?s hard, but if you ever wonder why nothing ever changes in this country and why the Left always seems to win the messaging wars it?s because you keep saying ?liberals? and keep calling conservative writers ?bloggers?. ?If you would only decide today was the day you were going to stop doing this, it would be a step in the right direction. ?And it would mean that tomorrow you could start trying to get big leaguers like Rush Limbaugh to stop using the word ?liberal?, too, which is one of his favorite words to say (I know)?but unfortunately railing against ?liberals? has been his schtick for many years and it?s hard to get people in conservative ranks to switch strategic gears with verbiage.

Notice that Democrats have no trouble doing just that, though. ?This is fascinating for me because I was raised a Democrat and remained one until 2008?and branding and messaging were drilled into us. ?As a Democrat, for whatever reason I just always picked up on whatever the new marketing strategy was for whatever issue I cared about and followed the new verbiage that went with it. ?If you ever listen to Democrats, they speak consistently from the same script and echo the same terms over and over again. ?This is because everything they say has been focus-group tested and high-paid consultants worked hard on determining the absolute best way to present issues to sway people to the Democrats? side. ?I think the Clintons perfected this sort of thing during their time in the White House and it became part of Democrat political culture after that.

If a word or phrase doesn?t get a desired reaction from the public, you?ll never hear a Democrat say it again. ?If someone does, there will be calls and emails and texts telling that person to stop it. ?One consequence that?s common is that you will never see that person give a live interview again if he or she can?t stop using the verbiage that doesn?t score well for Democrats.

Conservatives tend to roll their eyes at this stuff, but corporations live and die by their marketing and understand the power of words. ?That?s why PR teams make so much money and branding is the life blood of businesses.

I really wish Republicans would start to understand this instead of taking the weird attitude that ?that stuff doesn?t matter? or ?I?ll talk how I want and I don?t care about branding?. Democrats don?t pay attention to this stuff because it?s fun or they have nothing better to do. ?They focus on it because this is how they persuade people to their side.

Words matter.

What else is on your mind today?

What are people talking about in your part of the country?

What?s happening on the ground in your state?

This is an Open Thread (as is every Daily Doom Antidote) so have at it and try to find good articles or other links that counter any doom and gloom that Minitrue tries to instill in Republican ranks today.

How to Prepare for Small Business Saturday | Small Business Bonfire

In case you haven?t heard about it, Small Business Saturday is an event sponsored by American Express that is held on the Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, Small Business Saturday falls on November 24, 2012.

It?s a great reminder to consumers to support their local small businesses and mom-and-pop stores. But if you, as a store owner, wait until Small Business Saturday to prepare, you?ll definitely be sorry! Fortunately there are lots of things you can do to make the most of this year?s event.

Utilize Social Media Now

You should be using your accounts on Facebook, Twitter and other sites to engage your customers and clients. Please note that this does not mean you should bombard them with sales-y pitches and annoying promos. A sneak peek of your offerings here and there is nice. But you should be posting mostly helpful and engaging content that keeps your small business on the minds of your followers.

Remember to continue to grow your following during the time leading up to small business Saturday. The more genuine followers you can reach, the more customers you?re likely to see on November 24. When you follow someone new on social media, reach out to them and say hello. Ask them some questions, and get to know them better.

Make sure you follow Small Business Saturday on Facebook. As they are regularly posting info to help motivate small shop owners and give you advice on how to best take advantage of the big day.

Prepare Your Website

This is especially important if you run an e-commerce website. By early November you should have your website updates waiting in the wings and ready to go live. That means running usability tests, finalizing and proofreading web copy, and making sure that shoppers won?t hit any snags during the checkout process. It only takes one little glitch to turn online shoppers off, leaving you with nothing but abandoned virtual carts. Be prepared.

If you don?t sell items directly through your website, you should be posting announcements about Small Business Saturday and preparing an e-newsletter to announce any promos or special offers you?ll have in-store on November 24.

Prepare Your Shop

Marketing your business is important. You can start promoting your involvement in Small Business Saturday immediately with signs, post cards, and flyers. You should also be preparing for an influx of foot traffic, and that may mean rearranging items in your store to accommodate all the shoppers. Make sure your shelves are stocked.

Use the Toolkit

Finally, take advantage of the Small Business Saturday toolkit.? There are lots of tools in it to help you grow your small business all year long including up to $100 in free ads on Twitter, free signage and marketing materials for Shop Small, and lots of ideas for helping you grow your web presence through social media and video.

The bottom line is that now is the time to start prepping your business for Small Business Saturday. Are you ready?

National Physical Therapy Month ? Exercise Your Mind and Body ...

Dr. Mackarey's Health & Exercise ForumUSE IT OR LOOSE IT ? EXERCISE MIND AND BODY!

October is National Physical Therapy Month! Physical therapists are excited about new research which reinforces what we have all suspected; physical activity improves cognitive function and mental activity improves physical function.

Mariel Consagra, a local teacher, discovered this research while assisting her husband, Atty. Charles ?Chuck? Consagra, during his recovery from brain surgery two years ago. Chuck has worked hard in physical therapy at our clinic and has had a tremendous recovery, which he credits to his mind ? body exercise.

The new research is encouraging for older individuals who report losses in flexibility, strength, and balance that interfere with walking and other simple daily activities. In this population, physical decline is typically accompanied by a mental decline causing difficulty with learning new tasks, following instructions, planning, organizing, multi-tasking, reasoning, and remembering.? Safety often becomes an issue.? Reduced mental and physical function can eventually impair their ability to live independently requiring extra care from loved ones or placement in an assisted living facility or nursing home.

In our clinic, we have been fortunate to work with a few exceptions to the rule of aging and support the current studies. Some of you may know Gino Mori, MD at age 80 continues to take classes at the University of Scranton while his brother, Hugo Mori, MD at age 77 plays tennis every day. These ?elite? elders, and others like them, defy their age and are in surprisingly great shape!? Typically, these individuals report daily physical exercise (e.g. walking, dancing, golfing, tennis, skiing, and swimming) as well as regular mental activity (e.g. reading, sculpting, painting, completing crossword puzzles, and playing memory games).? Many of these individuals participate in social events, travel with family and friends, continue to work, and volunteer their time for a worthy cause, all of which require physical and mental effort.

Our current ?push-button world? with its modern conveniences has caused a real health crisis.? Many people live inactive lifestyles which deteriorate their vascular systems and result in a physical and mental decline.? Computer games, television shows, and video games contribute to our society?s slothful, stationary lives.? What happened to the old ?use it or lose it? philosophy?

Physical activity improves cognitive function!? Inactive individuals are twice as likely to develop dementia for several reasons. Physical exercise not only develops new blood vessels in the brain but also increases blood flow to this essential organ. Exercise that improves the heart?s ability to pump blood (i.e. cardiovascular exercise) also enhances the blood?s ability to carry oxygen.? Improved blood flow to the brain promotes energy production and waste removal.? People with heart disease and high blood pressure have reduced mental capacities partly due to reduced blood flow to the brain.? Physical exercise also stimulates the production of new brain cells, develops more connections between brain cells, and improves the function of the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for learning and memory and implicated in Alzheimer?s disease.? Moreover, the ?excess is best? theory applies:? a Canadian study revealed that the more a person exercises the greater the protective benefits for the brain, especially in women.

Mental stimulation enhances physical ability! A fascinating experiment was performed at the Cleveland Clinic in which participants were able to strengthen a muscle by just imagining that they were exercising it!? After just 12 weeks, these volunteers demonstrated gains in muscle strength up to 35% and scans of their brains revealed increased activity.? Mental exercise also improves physical coordination by reducing deterioration of the basal ganglia, an area of the brain responsible for voluntary movement and implicated in Parkinson?s disease.

Challenging your mind and body- Try Something new! The physical and cognitive decline associated with the aging process is not inevitable and is reversible!? At any age, muscles and bones continually remodel and brains constantly adapt, rewire, and develop new connections in response to ?exercise?, but challenging your mind and body is the ?key? to preventing declines in physical and mental function.? Performing a particular activity, mental or physical, on a regular basis causes our bodies and brains to become efficient at that task.? This means that our bodies and brains will complete the known task with very little effort and no ?learning? will occur.? Leave your comfort zone and engage your mind and body by learning something new or doing something different!

The ?mind-body connection? demonstrates that ?exercising? through ?learning? a new task simultaneously benefits your body and brain.? Our bodies and minds thrive, especially in older age, when challenged with new experiences and unique situations.? Most importantly, practice balance!? Learn new activities that ?test? your body and try novel tasks that challenge your mind.

  • Use your non-dominant hand to perform a routine task (e.g. brush your teeth or dial the phone)
  • Reduce sensory input: Get dressed/ wash your hair with your eyes closed
  • Combine two senses:
    • Listen to music and smell flowers
    • Listen to rain and tap your fingers
  • Break routines:
    • Drive to work along a new route
    • Shop at a different store
    • Learn a new language
    • Start a new hobby
  • If you walk for exercise:
    • Follow a different route
    • Swing your arms
    • Increase your speed
    • Walk some hills
  • Try a new physical activity instead of walking:
    • Swimming
    • Dancing
    • Tai Chi
    • Golfing
    • Low impact aerobics
  • Visit your doctor regularly and listen to your body.

Greece ramps up security ahead of Merkel visit

/

People walk past graffiti in central Athens on Monday ahead of the visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Debt-swamped Greece braced for two days of strikes, protests and potential violence as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, long demonized for her tough-talking, austerity-minded approach to Europe?s deepening woes, prepared to visit the epicenter of the crisis, three years since it began here.

To fend off potential attacks, at least 7,000 plainclothes police and hundreds more undercover agents have been mobilized from across the country to lock down the capital and erect steel fences around parliament. Snipers were already visibly stationed on the roof tops of government buildings in Athens; Commando Seals and Frogmen were also ordered on standby as helicopters began patrolling the Athenian skyline from Monday.

?It will be one of the biggest security drills in recent years,? said a senior police official speaking on condition of anonymity because of his knowledge of the security preparations.

Highly symbolic visit
In 1999, amid swelling opposition to NATO-led bombing raids in Kosovo, then-U.S. President Bill Clinton shortened a visit to Athens because of heightened security concerns mounted by a rash of rolling protests.

Deemed highly symbolic, Merkel?s seven-hour trip on Tuesday signals Berlin bid to keep Greece in the 17-nation euro and further mend strained relations with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the 61-year-old conservative leader, and one of the chancellor?s staunchest anti-austerity critics.

?We want to help Greece stabilize itself in the euro zone,? German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said in announcing the surprise visit, on Friday.

CNBC: World?s biggest debtor nations

Looming budget cuts have uncorked fresh social unrest, with the young, firebrand leader of Greece?s main opposition party, Syriza, calling on workers to flood the streets of Athens on Monday and Tuesday to show Merkel ?the real Greece.? Other opposition parties are urging Greeks to gather at the German embassy and form a human shield around the building as Merkel meets with Samaras.

GSEE and ADEDY, the umbrella labor unions for private and public sector employees, have called for a three-hour job walk out across the greater Athens area Tuesday, bringing the country?s already anemic economy to fresh standstill as a rash of demonstration are set to grip the capital.

Swelling anti-German sentiment here has revived haunting memories of Greece?s Nazi occupation. While West Germany paid $22 billion in reparations to Greece in 1960, opposition parties have staked fresh demands for added outlays. At least 300,000 Greeks starved to death after the Nazi regime requisitioned food and other material.

CNBC: Which country has the lowest debt in the euro zone?

Thousands of people were slaughtered, the country's gold reserves were plundered by Hitler's forces and nearly 90 percent of the country's Jewish population was deported and exterminated.

The timing of the trip could not be more crucial: Samaras is struggling to reach agreement with his country?s international lenders on some $14 billion in added budget cuts. Failure to seal a deal could propel European leaders meeting on Oct. 18 to hold off on some $40 billion in bailout funds to Greece. That could push this tiny Mediterranean nation to bankruptcy within weeks, imperiling the fate of the European single currency.

CNBC: Spain finance minister?s ?no bailout? remark sparks laughter

?The stakes are enormous,? George Pagoulatos, professor of European Politics and Economy at Athens University, told CNBC. ?That Merkel, however, has agreed to come to Athens and afford political backing to Samaras demonstrates in most demonstrable way possible, her decision to tackle Europe?s debt troubles with Greece within the euro equation.?

?For markets, international lenders and European leaders heading into that summit next week, this is a powerful message and any decision to arise [from that summit] will most probably be within that context,? he said.

Debt-choked Greece looks to sell off islands, marinas and more

Austerity
Even so, pundits and politicians here say that support will fall well short of any design by Europe?s biggest economy and Greece?s most powerful lender to let up on Berlin?s curative approach to the continent?s deepening debt woes: austerity.

Over the weekend, in fact, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned that any disbursal of bailout funds to Greece hinged on Athens? compliance with agreements to press ahead with added budget cuts -- a condition Samaras has already agreed to in securing a second $170 billion rescue loan from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund earlier this year.

Samaras, who fought his way to the helm of government after two divisive elections in May and June, has been trying to win over more time from creditors to ease the pain of a deeper-than-expected recession -- now in its fifth year.

Nationals rally past Cardinals in Game 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Given zero wriggle room, Nationals reliever Ryan Mattheus had realistic expectations. Entering with the bases loaded, nobody out and the cleanup man coming to the plate in the seventh inning, it was all about not letting the game get out of hand.

"I'm thinking minimize the damage," Mattheus said. "No big inning here."

He needed just two pitches to diffuse the crisis and keep it close for a deciding rally in Washington's 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in a division series opener on Sunday. Allen Craig, who batted an NL-leading .400 with runners in scoring position, grounded into a force at the plate and Yadier Molina bounced into an easy double play.

"It was a big moment," said Mattheus, who gave a big fist pump before walking off the mound. "It gave us life. The guys said, 'Hey, we can win this ballgame."

Rookie pinch-hitter Tyler Moore's big moment came just a few minutes later. Moore, who had two of the Nationals' three pinch homers, looped a two-out, two-run single off Marc Rzepczynski for the go-ahead hit.

There are just four players with postseason experience on the roster, but the Nationals led the National League with 98 wins. It's a huge step for a franchise that hadn't even come close to making the postseason since moving from Montreal in 2005, and brought postseason baseball to the nation's capital for the first time since 1933.

Washington overcame a wild start by 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez, who matched his career worst with seven walks. Five pitchers combined on a three-hitter against the Cardinals, who made it to the best-of-five division series by beating the Braves in a one-game playoff.

Tyler Clippard skirted an error in the eighth and Drew Storen got the save with a 1-2-3 ninth against the top of the order.

"Being able to grind out a win in this place, that's huge," rookie center fielder Bryce Harper said. "Our bullpen came in and threw awesome."

The NL East champions go for a 2-0 series lead Monday when Jordan Zimmerman, whose 2.92 ERA ranked among the league leaders, faces Jaime Garcia, whose career 2.48 ERA is the best among major league starters at 7-year-old Busch Stadium.

"We just lost a game," said third baseman David Freese, the MVP of the NLCS and World Series last fall. "We're going to wake up tomorrow ready to go."

The Cardinals wasted a 10-strikeout gem by Adam Wainwright, failing to capitalize enough on Gonzalez's career high-tying seven walks and frustrating their towel-waving fans.

"He's the best non-knuckleballer in the league," Freese said of Gonzalez, in a nod to the Mets' R.A. Dickey. "He's nasty."

A standing room crowd of 47,078, among the largest at 7-year-old Busch Stadium, bundled up for a game that began in a 54-degree chill and featured kaleidoscope late-afternoon shadows that bedeviled hitters for several innings.

Rookie shortstop Pete Kozma misplayed Michael Morse's grounder for an error to open the eighth and set up the Nationals' go-ahead rally. Desmond followed with a single off Mitchell Boggs, putting runners at the corners.

Danny Espinosa sacrificed, putting runners at second and third with one out. Nationals manager Davey Johnson sent up Chad Tracy with two outs and switched to Moore after Cardinals manager Mike Matheny opted for Rzepczynski, his lone bullpen lefty.

Rzepczynski was happy with his pitch, but Moore poked it to right field and both runners scored easily.

Johnson doesn't usually play small ball but opted for the bunt because Espinosa struck out three times earlier against Wainwright.

"I'm kind of from the Earl Weaver school, just keep swinging," Johnson said. "Don't like to steal that much, either. I don't like to give up outs."

Wainwright became the first Cardinals pitcher to reach double digits in strikeouts in the postseason since Bob Gibson also fanned 10 to beat the Tigers in Game 4 of the 1968 World Series.

Wainwright was a 14-game winner coming off reconstructive elbow surgery that sidelined him all of 2011, with 10 of the wins coming at home. He's been a postseason ace with a microscopic 0.77 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 23 1-3 innings.

He also fanned Harper and Ryan Zimmerman twice each.

"My fastball command kind of left me at the end," Wainwright said. "For the most part I felt like I went out there and competed my tail off. Gave it everything I had."

Gonzalez allowed just one hit in five innings, Freese's full-count bouncer between third and short to start the fourth. But he had trouble finding catcher Kurt Suzuki's glove and keeping warm.

"I kept blowing in my hand, kept looking to do whatever I could to throw a strike," Gonzalez said.

The second inning was his shakiest, when he allowed the Cardinals to score twice and take the lead without a hit. Gonzalez walked four of the first five hitters, putting St. Louis in position to score one run on a wild pitch and a second on Jon Jay's bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

"The whole time I was just saying minimize the damage because things were spinning out of control," Gonzalez said. "I just wanted to match everything Wainwright did. I was trying to keep up with him."

Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth robbed Daniel Descalso of a two-run homer off with a leaping catch to keep it at 2-1 in the sixth. Descalso had a fielding gem of his own in the seventh, ranging far to his left to glove Harper's grounder and then throwing him out by a few steps.

NOTES: The Cardinals went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. ... Garcia was 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA in nine starts at home. The lefty has a 2.48 career ERA at Busch. ... Gonzalez also walked seven on June 11, 2011, when he was with Oakland against the White Sox. ... Kozma committed one error in 26 games after taking over as the regular SS in September for injured Rafael Furcal.

Managing holidays in China no easy task

Beijing, Oct 8

Managing a well-off society is no less difficult than managing a poor one, said a state-run Chinese daily after holidaymakers jammed highways and packed tourist sites during a long holiday.

The eight-day holiday for the Mid-autumn Festival and National Day ended Sunday and many complained about traffic jams and overcrowding.

A record 80.87 million people traveled by road each day on average during the holiday.

An article in the Global Times said the "crowded long holiday shows that China's domestic demand is huge. The actual situation of our national economy is not as bad as some people speculated".

"China is an economy which is difficult to manage precisely. In other words, our management capabilities do not match current social and economic activities, which are very active. However, at the same time, they are also quite chaotic," it admitted.

Stating that China has a large population of 1.3 billion, it said: "As increasing number of people are engaging in tourism, Western management methods and ideas cannot deal with China's problem of too many people traveling at the same time."

"The increasingly better-off Chinese are demanding more quality products, better service and infrastructure. But these cannot be reached just with money in a short period of time. The public takes it for granted that China nowadays should be as orderly as any developed country. Massive traffic jams during the holidays can greatly frustrate Chinese," it said.

The daily went on to say that these jams are not difficult to comprehend.

"The Forbidden City reportedly received 18 million tourists in one day this holiday, with most of the tourists coming from outside Beijing. In order to prevent the Forbidden City from becoming overcrowded, it would be necessary to block at least half of the tourists. There aren't really any other options."

It is a big challenge to prevent "a population swarm during the holidays".

"Chinese governments have to be aware that managing a well-off society is no less difficult than managing a poor society. Governments need to be more professional and devoted to providing this service," said the daily.

Broadway producer says he was fraud victim

NEW YORK (AP) ? The psychological thriller "Rebecca" was a hit for author Daphne du Maurier and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Leave it to Broadway to one-up the master of suspense.

A planned New York production of the 1938 novel as a musical collapsed this week amid questions about its financial backing, and a growing suspicion that one of its primary investors ? a secretive businessman named Paul Abrams who had supposedly pledged $4.5 million, then suddenly died of malaria ? never existed.

The FBI has launched an investigation. Private investigators are on the case. The full truth may take some time to come out, but the lead producer of "Rebecca," Ben Sprecher, says he now believes he was taken in by an elaborate fraud.

"I never made up any investor. I never made up Paul Abrams. I never made up any of this," Sprecher said in a brief interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.

But two months after the "death," Sprecher's lawyer, Ronald Russo, said he has concluded that Abrams and the three other investors in the musical were indeed works of stagecraft, propped up by forged documents and bogus correspondence.

"Rebecca's" troubles began last winter, when the producers postponed a planned spring opening because of problems lining up financing for the $12 million show.

It was the second setback for Sprecher, a theater veteran who is trying to produce his first big-budget Broadway show, after past work as a theater owner and manager, and producer on revivals including "A Moon for the Misbegotten" and "American Buffalo."

The musical, about a woman nearly driven mad in a gloomy English mansion by the ghostly memory of her new husband's late wife, had successful runs in Vienna and other European cities over the past six years, but Sprecher had pulled the plug on a planned London premiere last year due to production and financial problems.

Then, a white knight seemed to appear. According to Sprecher's lawyer, the producer was introduced to a Long Island stock broker and securities dealer, Mark Hotton, who said he had connections to an international businessman named Paul Abrams who might be able to raise the remaining cash.

Soon, Sprecher had a signed contract in hand in which Abrams and three of his associates had agreed to put up $4.5 million, Russo said. By May, the producers had announced the musical would open at Broadway's Broadhurst theater in November. Abrams was listed as a co-producer on the press release.

But on the eve of rehearsals, with elaborate sets already under construction, Russo said, Hotton had some startling bad news: Abrams had contracted malaria on a trip to Africa and died in London in early August.

The news threw the production's future into doubt. It also raised concerns about Sprecher's credibility.

After The New York Times noted in an article last month that it could find no record of a millionaire named Paul Abrams dying of malaria in London, Sprecher acknowledged in an interview that he had never met the man in person or even spoken to him by telephone. All of their communication had been through email, sometimes through intermediaries.

Now, Russo said he believes that Hotton is to blame for the fiasco, and that Abrams and his three supposed associate investors were all figments of his imagination.

"These four people were probably made up," Russo said, though, he added, he wasn't sure why. "I don't know what motive this guy would have to give four fictitious names."

The AP's attempts to reach Hotton this week were unsuccessful. One of his lawyers, Heath Berger, declined to comment. Several phone numbers that had been listed in Hotton's name or used by his businesses have been disconnected.

Court and regulatory records show that Hotton has been the subject of multiple fraud complaints since the late 1990s.

Last year he filed for bankruptcy, seeking to discharge $15 million in debt, only to have a court-appointed trustee, Kenneth Silverman, accuse him in a court filing of failing to properly disclose his ownership of several businesses and bank accounts and withholding information in ways that were "knowing and fraudulent."

In a lawsuit last year, a debt auction company accused Hotton and his wife of selling off $7.2 million worth of accounts from an electrical business they owned that were "based on drastically inflated or fictitious invoices." He settled a 2006 lawsuit in which a real estate company accused him misappropriating $4 million.

A Long Island couple who lived a few blocks from Hotton in West Islip, are currently embroiled in a legal battle in which they have accused him of stealing their life savings ? nearly $5.4 million ? while he was working as a broker at Oppenheimer & Co., an investment bank. They claim much of the money went into a Ponzi scheme.

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, which registers securities dealers, lists Hotton as having been the target of multiple complaints by his customers. M.S. Farrell and Co., an investment banking firm, said in a regulatory filing that it fired Hotton in 1997 for misconduct. FINRA records said Hotton was also the subject of complaints at Ladenburg Thalmann & Co., where he worked prior to joining Oppenheimer. He also has a 1990 conviction for possession of stolen property, for which he served 280 hours of community service.

In notes attached to his FINRA file, Hotton has denied all of the above allegations of wrongdoing, in some cases blaming them on routine business disputes or sour grapes over investments that performed poorly.

Hotton took a new job with Obsidian Financial Group in February, but couldn't make it through the registration process and was let go in May, according to the company's president, Kevin Sharma.

"The regulators had too many issues with him," Sharma said.

Russo said Sprecher was unaware of Hotton's background when he began working with him last winter.

"Ben certainly did not do a deep due diligence," Russo said. But he noted that those types of investigations aren't common on Broadway, which has long been lampooned for less-than-rigorous financial practices. "Maybe Broadway will do things differently in the future."

After Abrams' supposed death, Sprecher booked a flight to London to try and meet with a one of Abrams purported representatives, a man he only knew as "Wexler," but canceled the trip when this person, whose true identity remains unknown, stopped communicating, Russo said.

In recent days, Sprecher has been dealing with a federal probe while trying to save the show.

The producer has met for hours with Justice Department investigators and turned over "hundreds" of emails to the FBI, Russo said.

Sprecher said he had managed to line up a new investor, but the arrangement fell through when someone spooked off the newcomer ? whose identity was supposed to be secret ? with an anonymous email accusing the producer of being complicit in fabricating Abrams.

"We are just kind of shell shocked," Sprecher said. "It's very hard for me to understand why this is happening."

He pledged that the show, which was indefinitely postponed on Monday, would eventually go on, though he couldn't yet say where or when.

"'Rebecca' is moving forward. And that's all I really care about at this moment," he said.

We Dare Food: Banana & Coffee Breakfast Drink

Personally, breakfast is my most important meal of the day! I?m the type of person who likes getting up at 6am in the morning to enjoy my breakfast leisurely while catching up on blog posts and news. However, there are days when I have to hurry off and not have time for any breakfast (I?m sure that many of you can relate to this! :P). On days like these, I rely on my trusty on-the-go breakfast drink/smoothie. Chuck everything in a blender, let it do its job, pour it in a travel mug and you?re good to go!

During my first undergraduate year, I'm always rushing off to classes with no time to spare. If you were to bump into me, I'd have a packet of breakfast drink on one hand and a granola/muesli bar on the other! However, after weeks and months of drinking them, I got sick of the flavours (I alternated between banana and strawberry) and I didn't get the caffeine hit that I needed. So, I started experimenting with my blender and haven't bought a single packet of breakfast drink since then!

Each time I make these, it?ll be a little different from its predecessor. On some days, there will additional frozen blueberries. Or an extra tablespoon of peanut butter. Or Milo instead of coffee. This recipe is flexible and feel free to make it according to your own liking!?

Banana & Coffee Breakfast Drink
  • 1 frozen large banana, slices into chunks
  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 1 tablespoon dry-freeze instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • a healthy dash of cinnamon (optional)
  1. Blend and drink!
(As I've mentioned, this recipe is according to my own liking! Please feel free to reduce the amount of coffee or substitute the soy milk with whatever milk you like or omit the honey or?add extra fruits/ingredients. NO stress involved here! :D)

I'm extremely peckish in the morning and I'll be starving the whole entire day if I don't get my breakfast right! So if you're like me, plop a Weet-bix/a handful of cereal into the drink and enjoy with a spoon!

What's your on-the-go breakfast??
